The Doctor and William were led to a yard within the castle. \u201cDoctor, I HAD hoped to be generous,\u201d said Doom, \u201cgiven that I only wanted your decision at midnight, but now you leave Loki and I no choice.\u201d William\u2019s head was put on a chopping block as a bald man known as the Executioner raised his axe. \u201cYou have three more chances, Doctor.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cNo!\u201d replied the Doctor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe TARDIS key!\u201d demanded Doom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI said no!\u201d insisted the Doctor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cYou\u2019re on your last chance, Doctor!\u201d warned Loki. \u201cThree! Two!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cLord Doom! Lord Loki!\u201d called a guard. \u201cWakandan soldiers and King T\u2019Challa are at our southern borders!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWhat?!\u201d snapped Doom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cMy brother and his friends!\u201d growled Loki. \u201cThey must have contacted Wakanda about our little procuring of the TARDIS!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAnd T\u2019Challa thought it would a good idea to test HIS diplomatic immunity!\u201d snarled Doom. \u201cWell, two can play at that game!\u201d He turned to the Executioner. \u201cThe Doctor still has one chance left. Dr. Davies is to stay alive until my return or she resists.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAnd if she still resists after his death, Lord Doom?\u201d asked the Executioner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cLoot her corpse for the TARDIS key. Loki will identify it if you turn up multiple keys.\u201d Doctor Doom then stormed out of the yard and towards his private jet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201c\u2026Loot her corpse?\u201d Loki muttered to himself. \u201cHe IS aware of Time Lords changing their bodies after death?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cDid you tell him about regeneration?\u201d asked the Doctor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201c\u2026Ah, yes, I forgot about one thing about regeneration\u2026\u201d purred Loki as he leveled his scepter at her. \u201cA second fatal blow during the process kills a Time Lord outright.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201c\u2026I see you\u2019ve done your homework,\u201d muttered the Doctor. \u201cLoki, Thanos would need the Space Stone AND the Time Stone to go back along your history and kill you. Do you know if he has the Space Stone?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI can safely say he does not, but if and when he does, I\u2019m not safe\u2026unless I have your TARDIS. It\u2019s practically another universe in there, making the stones useless.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cSo you intend to use it as a prison for Thanos,\u201d said the Doctor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cExactly. And since the fall of Gallifrey, your TARDIS is the only one available.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe old girl is capable of much more than you realize.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201c\u2026You refer to your ship as a sentient thing?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWell, why not?\u201d asked the Doctor. \u201cTARDIS\u2019s were grown and they have their own brains accompanied by all the kit in there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201c\u2026Grown?\u201d asked Loki.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Doctor Doom arrived at the southern border to see the Wakandan military sitting beyond the border. Doom approached the border and a man dressed in an all-black bodysuit with a panther theme arrived. \u201cKing T\u2019Challa,\u201d greeted Doom. \u201cI see you have decided to invade Latveria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cOh, this is no invasion, Lord Doom,\u201d replied T\u2019Challa, the Black Panther. \u201cThis is a rescue operation as you have knowingly kidnapped a citizen of America.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cMy dear T\u2019Challa, your fellow Avengers seem to have forgotten to tell you that he simply followed me after trying to stop his patient from taking what\u2019s mine.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cSee, that\u2019s the thing, the blue box belongs to the woman they were tending too. Given the nature of the box and its connections with UNIT, I have been authorized to retrieve the box and your prisoners.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAuthorized? By whom?\u201d scoffed Doom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe United Nations, who else?\u201d asked T\u2019Challa. \u201cHere. An official statement from the UN.\u201d He handed Doom a letter. Doom took it and read it. His eyes widened in rage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThey wouldn\u2019t DARE!\u201d he thundered. \u201cThey would turn Latveria into an occupied nation just to retrieve two people and a box?!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI was surprised that America was okay with it, but all official evidence points to you kidnapping two non-Latverians and stealing their property. Now, with your permission, I\u2019d like to retrieve them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cPermission denied!\u201d shouted Doom. \u201cThose two proved to be too dangerous for me to release alive! And if you send your military to my side of the border, I will consider this an act of war and slay you personally! Is that clear?!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cYou can call it what you like,\u201d replied Black Panther, \u201cbut we\u2019re not leaving without them!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThen it seems we\u2019re at an impasse, T\u2019Challa! I am correct in assuming you don\u2019t want your soldiers to die right now?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Back at Castle Doom, the Doctor pondered an escape plan. \u201c\u2026Loki,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cHm?\u201d asked Loki.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI thought you were bound with a serpent dripping venom above your eyes,\u201d continued the Doctor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cNorse myth, Doctor,\u201d replied Loki. \u201cI was freed a while ago.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cBy who?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cBy Thor, who else?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThen Sleipnir?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201c\u2026That one is true, sadly.\u201d Loki looked rather embarrassed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cOof, I\u2019m sorry to hear that. \u2026Still, you learned what we go through.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cOh, yes. If I said pregnancy was easy for a woman, that would be my weakest lie.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cOh, come on!\u201d scoffed the Executioner. \u201cIt can\u2019t be that hard!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAll right, Skurge!\u201d replied Loki. \u201cLet\u2019s see how YOU last being a mare giving birth to an eight-legged horse!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cOh, please! Like a horse would feel pain in the first place!\u201d William took that as his chance to get closer to the Doctor. As Loki and the Executioner argued, the Doctor and William undid their bonds and made their way to the door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cDoctor, you tell him-! HEY!\u201d shouted Loki. That was when the Doctor and William dashed back into the castle. Loki then pulled out his comms. \u201cDoom! Come in!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cFool!\u201d berated Doom. \u201cListen to me, Loki! The Doctor is not to return to her TARDIS! I cannot promise a successful second attempt now that this incident has achieved international notice!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWhat do you mean \u2018international notice\u2019?!\u201d snapped Loki on the other end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI mean that the UN threatened to occupy Latveria if I don\u2019t release our prisoners and the TARDIS!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThey wouldn\u2019t dare!\u201d yelped a guard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cYou\u2019d better have a decent military, Doom!\u201d threatened Loki. He ended the call. \u201cCome on! After them!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Doctor and William searched the upper levels, but there was still no sign of the TARDIS. \u201cCome on, old girl!\u201d said the Doctor. \u201cWhere are you?!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cDoctor, maybe in here?!\u201d called William as he pointed out a door. The Doctor looked through the window.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201c\u2026It\u2019s a laboratory in there,\u201d explained the Doctor. \u201cLet\u2019s take a look.\u201d She opened the door and they began their search.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cHey! Look!\u201d called William happily. In the corner was the TARDIS!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThere you are!\u201d cheered the Doctor as she pulled out her key.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cSTAY WHERE YOU ARE!\u201d shouted Loki\u2019s voice as a green ball of energy flew past the Doctor\u2019s head. The guards fired as the Doctor and William took cover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cHow strong do you think this table is?!\u201d asked William.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe just need it to be long enough for us to get inside the TARDIS!\u201d replied the Doctor. They picked up the table and used it as a makeshift shield, carrying it with them all the way to the TARDIS. The Executioner raised his axe, ready to throw it! The TARDIS\u2019 door then opened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIN! NOW!\u201d shouted the Doctor as she pulled William into the TARDIS. The Executioner threw his axe, splintering the table just as the TARDIS doors closed and it faded from existence with the sound of its mighty engines!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cNO!\u201d shouted Loki. The instant the TARDIS fully faded from view, Doom entered the lab. The Executioner looked between Loki and Doom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201c\u2026B-Behold!\u201d he said, trying to salvage the incident. \u201cThe site of a glor-!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cNo!\u201d snapped Loki. \u201c\u2026You had one job! Just the one!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cSo our prisoners and prize escaped,\u201d remarked Doom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201c\u2026I think we all can share in that failure, considering we chose incompetent minions, wouldn\u2019t you agree?\u201d asked Loki.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201c\u2026I will accept that,\u201d replied Doom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAll right!\u201d said Tony back in Avengers\u2019 Tower as the Doctor and William regaled the Avengers with how they escaped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cDoctor, you\u2019re every bit the genius UNIT says you are!\u201d chuckled Natasha, now in civilian clothes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIn retrospect, it was kind of easy to get away from them,\u201d remarked William. \u201cTwo power-mad dictators with minions less intelligent than them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI could have come up with the plan sooner,\u201d admitted the Doctor, \u201cbut panic DID set in at the wrong time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cSpeaking of time,\u201d said Tony, \u201cNick Fury called. He wants to add you to SHIELD\u2019s staff as a scientific advisor. He\u2019s got an interview set up.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cReally?\u201d asked the Doctor. \u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe 15th<\/sup>, I think,\u201d replied Tony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201c15th<\/sup>, 15th<\/sup>,\u201d muttered the Doctor. \u201c\u2026No. Impossible. I\u2019m still fully loaded with UNIT work for the next 200 years and I have other duties spaced between them, but any time after that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cSo, you won\u2019t be able to see Nick for a while,\u201d remarked Steve. \u201cWe\u2019ll just tell them you\u2019re rather busy with other work then.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cYes, well, speaking of other work\u2026\u201d mused the Doctor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In the commons room, William sat in a chair next to the TARDIS, contemplating the Doctor\u2019s offer. The Doctor arrived. \u201c\u2026Well?\u201d she asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201c\u2026You could have picked Iron Man,\u201d replied William. \u201cYou could have picked the Hulk. You could have picked Captain America! Hell, you could have picked Director Fury! Why me?!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cBecause celebrities like the Avengers are a dime a dozen,\u201d replied the Doctor. \u201cBut people like you, people who remember the important stuff, people that can do well under pressure when the chips are down\u2026people like you are the shining examples of the ordinary folk of the universe. \u2026So, what do you say? A trip to the Eye of Orion? Coffee on Florana? Seeing the Seven Constellations of Pol-tosh? Or, perhaps, staying local, seeing Dr. Martin Luther King\u2019s famous I have a Dream <\/em>speech in person? Seeing the construction of the pyramids? Or perhaps seeing when you humans grow up and become a vast interstellar superpower?\u201d William looked up, then smiled as he stood up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cYou\u2019re the pilot and guide here,\u201d he replied. \u201cYou pick my first adventure in that awesome TARDIS of yours!\u201d The Doctor smiled warmly as she opened the door to the TARDIS. She and William went inside, the doors shut, and the TARDIS activated its ancient engines with a mighty \u201cVworp! Vworp!\u201d as it faded out of existence just as Clint Barton entered the room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cHey, any chance-?!\u201d he called before seeing the last vestiges of the TARDIS fade away. \u201c\u2026No chance then.
