A woman was walking down the streets on an errand for her boss. And, of course, she HAD to do it in company-approved heels. Why couldn\u2019t that jerk of a boss just let her and other women wear comfortable shoes? Ballet flats are fine enough, but NO! He just HAD to say that these damn ankle-killers were good enough! She rounded a corner and someone stepped out of an alley. The person was short, wore some sort of black and silver armor, and had a domed helmet. \u201cHey! I\u2019m walking here!\u201d barked the woman. \u201cGet outta here!\u201d The figure didn\u2019t move. \u201c\u2026Hey! Didn\u2019t you hear me?! I said-!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cKatharine Benson\u2026\u201d whispered a woman\u2019s voice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c\u2026H-Hello?\u201d asked the woman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWelcome\u2026to a new war!\u201d continued the woman\u2019s voice. Something then rushed at her from the alley, causing her to scream in terror! The short person watched on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Outside a firehouse, a familiar blue box faded into view with a familiar Vworp Vworp. The door swung into the box as the Doctor and William stumbled out with smoke joining them! \u201cWhat kind of repairs do you call that?!\u201d he gagged as he tried to get the smoke out of his lungs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat wasn\u2019t me!\u201d protested the Doctor. \u201cThat was a dimensional disturbance, disrupting repairs!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDimensional disturbance?! What\u2019s that supposed to mean?!\u201d said William as he shut the TARDIS door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt means, William, that something very large came from outside our reality and entered this one, choosing this specific time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAnd what time IS it?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cJudging by the air, I\u2019d say late 1980\u2019s. Manhattan, if you want to be precise in spatial terms.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cManhattan?\u201d repeated William. \u201cWe\u2019re back in New York?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYes. We went forwards in time, now backwards,\u201d replied the Doctor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAnd staying just outside of New England,\u201d remarked William. \u201cSo, whatever made the TARDIS go haywire has picked this point for some reason. But why?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo idea,\u201d mused the Doctor. She looked up to see that the TARDIS landed outside a firehouse with a sign out front. It looked like a ghost trying to get through a red no symbol. William looked up and gasped when he saw the sign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI know that business!\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBusiness?\u201d asked the Doctor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYeah! My grandfather used to work here! Doctor, we\u2019re in front of Ghostbusters HQ!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGhostbusters? Now they might help figure out that dimensional disturbance, given that they\u2019ve dealt with plenty of extra-dimensional entities. Let\u2019s go see if they\u2019re here.\u201d The Doctor and William then entered the firehouse and looked around. There was a redhead sitting at a desk, looking like the stereotypical bored secretary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHuh, no Ecto-1,\u201d remarked William. The secretary heard that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDr. Venkman and his team,\u201d she explained in a bored Brooklyn accent, like she was just reading a script, \u201care currently out on a call and they\u2019ll be back as soon as possible. In the meantime, do you have any job details you want me to pass on to them?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cActually, I think there\u2019s something they can help me with,\u201d replied the Doctor. \u201cMy friend and I encountered a dimensional disturbance and we want to make sure it isn\u2019t anything to do with the containment system. Of course, we wouldn\u2019t dream of checking without your employers\u2019 permission.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c\u2026You must be a scientist if you\u2019re gonna mention their equipment like that,\u201d remarked the secretary as she wrote down the details. \u201cName?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Doctor and Dr. William Davies,\u201d answered the Doctor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c\u2026Doctor who?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cJust the Doctor.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSeriously, that\u2019s all she calls herself,\u201d muttered William.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWell, I gotta have a first and last name here,\u201d said the secretary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c\u2026How about Joan Smith?\u201d suggested the Doctor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDoctor\u2026Joan\u2026Smith\u2026\u201d repeated the secretary as she wrote it down. \u201cAnd do you have a phone number so we can contact you later about further details and billing?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c\u2026Well, the number isn\u2019t exactly an American phone,\u201d replied the Doctor. Just then, everyone heard a car come into the firehouse. It was a white Cadillac Miller-Meteor Sentinel limo-style endloader combination car with all sorts of gadgets and sirens on its roof and the Ghostbusters logo on its sides. The doors opened as the Ghostbusters stepped out\u2026as well as a flying green blob with a huge mouth, eyes, and arms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSLIMER, YOU GET BACK HERE!\u201d shouted one of the Ghostbusters, Peter Venkman, as he chased the ghost, Slimer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPeter, you really shouldn\u2019t have taunted Slimer,\u201d remarked the driver, Winston Zeddemore. Ray Stanz and Egon Spengler then removed the traps from the back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cErm, excuse me,\u201d called the Doctor. Ray and Egon looked to her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAnother customer!\u201d said Ray. \u201cSo!\u201d he pulled out a notebook. \u201cWhat\u2019s the spook?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cErm, no spook, Dr\u2026Stanz, was it?\u201d replied the Doctor. \u201cMy friend and I encountered a dimensional disturbance and arrived here thanks to it. Could it be possible your containment system is causing it?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSo you\u2019re extradimensional beings yourself?\u201d asked Egon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTime travelers, actually.\u201d Egon stroked his chin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI have to admit, this is a new one. I don\u2019t think our containment unit should be able to interfere with temporal travel, unless your vehicle is dimensionally transcendental like the containment unit is.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDimensionally transcendental?\u201d asked William.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s bigger on the inside,\u201d replied the Doctor. \u201cAnd yes, Dr. Spengler, my ship is dimensionally transcendental.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat would cause problems if a ghost was trying to break out,\u201d said Egon. \u201cMaybe we should check.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMay I help?\u201d offered the Doctor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf you\u2019re interested,\u201d replied Egon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat about me?\u201d asked William.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI can give you a tour of the place,\u201d offered Winston once he closed the hood on the Ecto-1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c\u2026Might as well. The science I studied is how to keep a body alive, not whatever this ghost science is.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Katherine was terrified out of her mind! First an alien, now a ghost?! This is a nightmare! She was stuck on the alien ship, languishing in a cell. She was getting hungry now. Her cell\u2019s door opened to reveal an alien guard. \u201cYou!\u201d barked the alien. \u201cFollow!\u201d Kathrine stood up and followed the alien. Maybe this was all a misunderstanding? Maybe she was gonna be freed after pleading her case to the alien commander? \u2026No dice. She was led to what looked like a laboratory with two aliens standing by. Both aliens were helmetless, so Katherine could see their potato-shaped heads and identical faces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSir, please!\u201d begged Katherine. \u201cWhoever you\u2019re looking for, I\u2019m not her!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWho said we\u2019re looking for a specific individual, woman?\u201d replied one of the helmetless aliens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSit on that bench,\u201d directed the other. He then waved the guard away. The guard left and Katherine sat on the bench.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cD-Don\u2019t hurt me!\u201d begged Katherine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe make no promises,\u201d remarked the second alien.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMy batch brother and I,\u201d said the first alien, \u201chave been wondering if it\u2019s possible to genetically program troops against the effects of temporal and spectral energies.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI don\u2019t understand!\u201d cried Katherine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOf course, you don\u2019t,\u201d scoffed the first alien. \u201cShut up.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cJust lie still,\u201d directed the second alien, \u201cwhile the array is moved into position.\u201d Said array lowered over Katherine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMy brother, our ally, and I,\u201d explained the first alien, \u201chave been working on a genetic restructure that, in theory, should negate the natural propensity for entropy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOf course,\u201d remarked the second alien as he fiddled with the controls, \u201csuch an idea goes against the very laws of life and the afterlife&#8230;but what\u2019s the point in dreaming small?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis WILL hurt,\u201d said the first alien.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIs the subject ready?\u201d asked a new woman\u2019s voice in a whisper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re all ready here,\u201d replied the first alien. A transparent woman with mist rolling out of her waist where legs should be then came forth. She raised a clawed hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c\u2026Now,\u201d she said. The aliens then fired up their machine and bombarded Katherine with something painful! Katherine screamed in absolute agony for what felt like an eternity to her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA little pain is only to be expected,\u201d said the second alien. \u201cAfter all, I can hardly rewrite your entire genetic code without SOME discomfort.\u201d The aliens then powered their machine down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAnd there we are,\u201d chuckled the first alien as he switched on a recording device. \u201cAll done. Now, be honest with us. How do you feel?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cB-Burns!\u201d wheezed Katherine. \u201cEverything\u2026burns!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPathetic!\u201d scoffed the woman in her usual whisper. \u201cSuch a low pain threshold. You should try fighting the Time Lords!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLet us see how you deal with the combined bombardment of temporal and spectral energy,\u201d said the first alien. \u201cIn theory, you should now be impervious to both.\u201d Another machine lowered as the woman pointed a finger at Katherine. Light then spilled forth from both the machine and the woman\u2019s finger, striking Katherine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cJust imagine!\u201d called the second alien. \u201cAll the ravages of time! The warping of your body\u2019s cells when exposed to spectral radiation! Might they, with our assistance, have become nothing but the brush of a gentle breeze? A thing of\u2026inconsequence?\u201d Unfortunately, Katherine proved them wrong through her screams as her body warped and contorted before aging rapidly to dust along with her clothes. \u201c\u2026Or,\u201d sighed the second alien as he turned off the machine and the woman ceased her treatment, \u201cwill you simply mutate then decompose to dust like the other test subjects? Shame.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo matter,\u201d replied the woman. \u201cWe learn.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYes,\u201d agreed the first alien. \u201cWe learn.\u201d He then switched on a comms unit. \u201cStregg to scouting unit. Gurast and I need a fresh specimen. And have maintenance brought down here.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYes, Sir!\u201d replied the person on the other end. \u201cSontar HA!\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Manhattan, 1987.
