In a city plaza by a tower with a giant long fish wrapped around it, various people were doing their own thing. The people had black eye masks, but these were no bandits. They had pointed ears and what looked like two club tentacles with the males tying them back and the females just letting them hang loose. These were the humanoid descendants of squids, the Inklings. Right now, a female Inkling with orange tentacles and headphones was bobbing her head to the beat of a song by a music group, the Squid Squad. As she listened, she then heard a strange noise. \u2026That wasn\u2019t part of the song. It sounded like a wheezing, groaning noise, followed by a thud. She stopped her music and headed off to the alley where a shady individual used to sit at. She blinked when she saw a blue box. \u201cWhat in the name of the Great Zapfish?\u201d she muttered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cHey! Kaori!\u201d called a voice. She looked behind her to see a male Inkling with goggles on his forehead and blue tentacles. \u201cHey, girl! What\u2019s going on?\u201d asked the male.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cJohn, did you set this up?\u201d asked the Inkling girl, Kaori. The Inkling boy, John, looked at the blue box.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201c\u2026Nope, that ain\u2019t mine,\u201d he said. \u201cIt says \u2018Police Public Call Box\u2019. Maybe it\u2019s a new police thing?\u201d At that moment, the door was opened from the inside and out stepped\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAMY?!\u201d yelped Kaori. There she was, Amy Rose from Mobius!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cKaori! John!\u201d greeted Amy. She hugged the two Inklings, then looked inside the box, the TARDIS. \u201cDoctor, come on out!\u201d she said. At that moment, the Doctor stepped out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cSo the telepathic circuits worked?\u201d she asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThey sure did!\u201d confirmed Amy. \u201cKaori, John, meet the Doctor from the planet of Gallifrey!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAn alien?!\u201d yelped John.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cYep! That\u2019s me! I come in peace!\u201d confirmed the Doctor. \u201cAnd you two are\u2026?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI\u2019m Kaori, this is John,\u201d introduced Kaori. \u201cWelcome to Inkopolis!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cInteresting,\u201d mused the Doctor. \u201cThis is 12,000 years after the great flood of 4756.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201c\u2026I\u2026I suppose,\u201d said John.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cShe\u2019s a time traveler,\u201d explained Amy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI see\u2026anyways!\u201d Kaori changed tactics. \u201cWhat are you doing here, Amy? The Smash Tournament isn\u2019t for a while.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI just wanted to visit friends,\u201d replied Amy. \u201cWe just came from far into the future after Earth gets roasted by the sun.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cStill 5 billion years away,\u201d assured the Doctor. \u201cLet\u2019s just say we\u2019re looking for a place to relax.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cOoh! Maybe there\u2019s a turf war going on!\u201d said Kaori.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cTurf war?\u201d asked the Doctor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe Inklings can fire their ink through special firearms,\u201d explained Amy. \u201cThe idea of turf wars is to cover more surface area than your opponents. It\u2019s a four-on-four game.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI got it!\u201d called John after he looked up the newest matches. \u201cThere\u2019s gonna be a turf war at Urchin Underpass with both teams from Splatsville in a few minutes!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cLet\u2019s go see!\u201d replied Kaori.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cCome on, Doctor! It\u2019ll be fun to watch!\u201d urged Amy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201c\u2026All right, might as well get stuck in,\u201d mused the Doctor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAll right!\u201d cheered John. \u201cThis way!\u201d He led everyone to a train station.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The train took them to the viewing gallery at Urchin Underpass. The Doctor and her group took their seats and awaited the teams\u2019 arrival. Four cubes appeared in the air on each side of the stage. \u201cThe cleanup must be abysmal under there,\u201d muttered the Doctor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cNot really,\u201d replied Kaori. \u201cOur ink evaporates pretty quickly after it\u2019s left alone for a while.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cReally?\u201d The Doctor had to figure that out somehow. Just then, squids and octopuses appeared on the cubes, one team in purple, the other team in green. The squids then turned into Inklings and the octopuses turned into life-forms similar to the Inklings! \u201cSo squids aren\u2019t the only ones who gained a humanoid form?\u201d asked the Doctor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cNope,\u201d replied John. \u201cA couple of years ago, we had Octolings join us. They\u2019re the better half of the Octarians, our ancient enemies in the Great Turf War. Any time you see an Octoling in a turf war, they\u2019ve abandoned their king, Octavio.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThree! Two! One! GO!\u201d shouted the announcer. The two teams launched off their cubes and fired at the ground. An Octoling girl on the Purple Team aimed what looked like a sniper rifle at an Inkling boy with a giant roller paintbrush and fired! The Inkling burst into purple ink and what looked like a sad, cartoony squid flew up into the sky.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cSh-She just-!\u201d spluttered the Doctor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cLook over there, Ma\u2019am,\u201d directed John. The cartoony squid then entered one of the cubes and the Inkling boy came back, looking a bit miffed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201c\u2026H\u2026How?!\u201d asked the Doctor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI dunno, those things just bring us back,\u201d replied Kaori. \u201cI\u2019m not a scientist.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cEven then, it\u2019s not perfect,\u201d remarked John. \u201cThey can\u2019t prevent ALL deaths, just turf war related ones.\u201d It was then the song changed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cOh boy! Now or Never<\/em>!\u201d said Kaori.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThat\u2019s the Squid Sisters version, isn\u2019t it?\u201d mused John. \u201cCome on, Green! Come on, Green!\u201d A countdown then appeared on the big screen. At the end of the countdown, a whistle blasted. Out stepped two cats! One was clearly an adult, the other was a kitten!<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cAre\u2026are those\u2026the judges?\u201d asked the Doctor. She notice that their black and white fur pattern made them look like they were wearing black suspenders and bowties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cJudd and his clone, Li\u2019l Judd,\u201d explained Kaori. The two cats were walking upright and were dancing just a bit as meters below them filled with the teams\u2019 colors, green for Judd and purple for Li\u2019l Judd. Li\u2019l Judd then pulled out a purple flag as the purple team\u2019s meter had 52.6% turf covered. The way Li\u2019l Judd pulled the flag out seemed to knock Judd flat onto his stomach. The Green Team wailed at their loss with an Inkling girl stamping her feet like a little kid while the Purple team were dancing in victory with an Inkling girl on the team hugging her gatling gun like it was a toy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cSo that\u2019s a typical turf war?\u201d asked the Doctor once they all returned to Inkopolis Plaza.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cYep! The next stages should be announced soon,\u201d said John. \u201cNow if the Squid Sisters would-!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cOh, here we go!\u201d complained Kaori. \u201cYou were like that when Off the Hook took over stage announcements!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cCome on! You can\u2019t beat the classic Squid Sisters!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cErm, who ARE the Squid Sisters?\u201d asked the Doctor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThey\u2019re a pair of pop idols,\u201d explained Kaori. \u201cCousins from Calamari County. Their names are Callie and Marie. On top of music, they\u2019d host Inkopolis News right here in Inkopolis Plaza to announce the stages for turf wars and other related activities. They were then succeeded by Pearl and Marina, the rapper and DJ group known as Off the Hook, they\u2019d host Inkopolis News over in Inkopolis Square. These days, a trio of idols known as Shiver, Frye, and Big Man, are doing the news from Splatsville. Their group is called Deep Cut and their news broadcast is called Anarchy Splatcast.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cInteresting,\u201d mused the Doctor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201c\u2026Doctor,\u201d said Amy, \u201csomething\u2019s making the fur on the back of-!\u201d She was interrupted as a giant tentacle wrapped around her, pinning her arms to the side and gagging her mouth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWHAT IN-?!\u201d yelped the Doctor. She then saw that the tentacle had feet\u2026and a face with inflated lips and eyes with green sclera and purple corneas! \u201cOi! Let her down!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cNot a chance!\u201d replied the tentacle. \u201cMy king has need of her!\u201d It then dove into a sewer grate!<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThat was an Octarian!\u201d said John. \u201cThey haven\u2019t attacked Inkopolis in a long time!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cCome on, John!\u201d said Kaori. \u201cYou too, Doctor!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cNaturally! That\u2019s my friend he kidnapped!\u201d The Doctor and the two Inklings followed the Octarian.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The group ended up in a valley with all sorts of kettles littering the place. \u201c\u2026Octo Valley,\u201d said John. \u201cWhat a dump. A force of Octavio loyalists still live here, even after his defeat by the New Squidbeak Splatoon.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201c\u2026Splatoon?\u201d asked the Doctor. Her answers were cut short as someone laughed overhead. Everyone looked up to see a spherical machine with fists and a mix table flying down. Amy was still bound by an Octarian in the machine, and piloting the mechanical beast was a giant octopus with a green X scar and a kabuto style helmet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cGYAH HA HA HA HA!\u201d laughed the octopus. \u201cTried to party without me, huh?! A bit of a reunion with Smash Brothers and a spectator?!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cDJ Octavio!\u201d snarled Kaori.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cSo that\u2019s the Octarian Leader?\u201d mused the Doctor. \u201cMr. Octavio, sir-!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cYou will address me as DJ or Your Majesty!\u201d snarled Octavio. \u201cUnless you want your brain remixed!\u201d Amy shouted something, but the tentacle still wrapped around her mouth muffled her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cQuit squirming! You can\u2019t even bite me!\u201d snapped the Octarian restraining her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cSir, that\u2019s MY companion you have as your hostage,\u201d continued the Doctor. \u201cI urge you to release her at once.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cFat chance, Ape Girl!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cSteady on there!\u201d protested the Doctor. That was when Octarians restrained her as well as Kaori and John. Octavio took the time to brag.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cOn behalf of the Octarian Nation, I welcome you distinguished guests to Octo Valley!
