The hustle and bustle of the city can\u2019t be beat for some people. On another planet, far off in our future, that idea is no exception. A brunette woman wearing a stunning red suit with a floppy brimmed hat was the mayor of one such city! The woman breathed deeply as she took in the sounds of her city, the Big Banana itself, New Donk City! Modeled after New York City of the old homeworld of Earth, New Donk City was filled with taxis, humans, and the Crazy Cap home store! The mayor, Pauline, then heard a taxi getting closer. She looked to her left to see a taxi pull up. The taxi\u2019s passengers then got out. One was a short, fat man with a moustache, blue overalls, and a red shirt and cap with the letter M on it. The other was a tall blonde woman in a pink skirt, a white blouse, and a floppy brimmed hat. \u201cMario! Peach!\u201d greeted Pauline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cPauline! Great to see you again!\u201d called the blonde woman, Princess Peach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt\u2019s been way too long!\u201d the short man, the famous hero of the Mushroom Kingdom, Mario, chimed in. The three of them hugged each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI\u2019m so glad we could find time in our busy schedules to do this!\u201d said Pauline once the hug broke off. \u201cSo, where shall we start?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cYou\u2019re the mayor,\u201d replied Mario. \u201cYou decide!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cMario\u2019s right! This IS your\u2026hang on\u2026\u201d Peach trailed off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cPeach? Is\u2026hang on, is that-?!\u201d yelped Mario.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe TARDIS?!\u201d asked Pauline. It was, indeed, the TARDIS. It fully materialized on the sidewalk where Mario, Peach, and Pauline stood. The doors opened and Amy stepped out first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThis place looks\u2026\u201d she muttered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAMY!\u201d called Mario and his group. Amy looked up to see them!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cMARIO! PEACH! PAULINE!\u201d The hedgehog girl hugged them all!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cStill travelling with the Doctor, hm?\u201d asked Mario.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cOh yeah! \u2026But I\u2019m afraid this isn\u2019t a social call.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt isn\u2019t?\u201d asked Peach once the hug broke off. At that moment, the Doctor and Lurra Rus stepped out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cHey, Doctor! Lurra! Look where we are!\u201d called Amy. The Doctor looked ahead to see Mario, Peach, and Pauline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAh! Back on Nokiko!\u201d realized the Doctor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201c\u2026Amy, did you call that woman\u2026the Doctor?\u201d asked Peach. Amy explained regeneration to Peach, something she felt she did a lot after New York.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201c\u2026You\u2019re seriously the Doctor?\u201d Mario asked the Doctor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe same one that helped you lot deal with the Daleks,\u201d confirmed the Doctor. \u201cWith Luigi, Daisy, and Rosalina, if I recall. They duplicated Luigi and Amy as part of their war against a sect of humanized Daleks.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cOkay, I\u2019m convinced,\u201d replied Mario. \u201cWelcome back, Doctor!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cYes, welcome to New Donk City, the Big Banana!\u201d greeted Pauline. \u201cAnd your friend is\u2026?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI\u2019m Lurra Rus,\u201d replied Lurra Rus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cNice to meet you. What brings you here, if not a social call?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe\u2019re tracking something called the Grouping,\u201d explained the Doctor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI\u2026accidentally started it,\u201d said Amy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWhat makes you-?\u201d Pauline couldn\u2019t finish her question as passersby warned her to look out. Pauline looked up\u2026and a big, hairy thing landed near her, scattering everyone on impact. The hairy thing groaned, then howled in pain as Pauline landed on his back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWhy my back?!\u201d protested the hairy thing. \u201cWhy always my back?!\u201d The hairy thing turned out to be a brown-furred gorilla with a red tie with the letters DK in yellow on it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cSorry about that, Sir,\u201d apologized Pauline. \u201cI\u2026no way!\u201d The gorilla turned, then yelped in surprise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cPAULINE?!\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cDK!\u201d cheered Pauline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cDonkey Kong?\u201d asked Mario. The gorilla, Donkey Kong, looked over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cMario!\u201d he growled. \u201cYou realize I\u2019m blaming YOU for this!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cBlaming him?\u201d asked the Doctor. \u201cFor what?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201c\u2026I\u2019m sorry, who are-?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cHey, DK!\u201d called Amy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAMY! Good to see you again! And you, Lurra Rus! \u2026Where\u2019s the Doctor? I assume you\u2019re still travelling with her?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cRight there, apparently,\u201d replied Pauline. \u201cShe can change her body, from what Amy said.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cHello, Donkey Kong!\u201d greeted the Doctor. \u201cNow, my original question?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cOh, yeah! Bowser\u2019s teamed up with King K. Rool for some odd reason and I bet it has something to do with Mario!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cME?!\u201d protested Mario. \u201cI didn\u2019t do anything to either of them! \u2026At least, not recently!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cOh yeah?!\u201d challenged Donkey Kong. \u201cThen why did they boast about destroying us both when I was fired out of that cannon?!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cHold on, I rather think we need some context here!\u201d called the Doctor. \u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201c\u2026All right, all right,\u201d sighed Donkey Kong as he calmed down. \u201cI was chilling on Kong Island, having some bananas, then all of a sudden, King K. Rool\u2019s ship, the Gangplank Galleon, fired on the island. I swam over there and jumped aboard, then got attacked by Hammer Bros instead of Kremlings. Then King K. Rool and Bowser stepped out of the Captain\u2019s cabin, made the ship fly, and then stuffed me into a cannon all while boasting that they\u2019ll destroy us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAnd destroy you we shall, you mumbling, moronic mammal!\u201d called a voice from the sky.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cOh no,\u201d groaned the Doctor. \u201cAnd all while a chronal surge happened!\u201d Everyone looked up to see a fleet of sailing vessels with propellers instead of masts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cBowser\u2019s air fleet!\u201d gulped Peach. Amy readied her hammer as Mario got into a fighting stance while Donkey Kong thumped his chest and hooted. Koopas and Kremlings then leapt from the ships and attacked! Peach and Pauline stayed well out of the way, since they weren\u2019t combat capable at the moment. The Doctor and Lurra Rus joined Peach and Pauline as Mario, Amy, and Donkey Kong fought back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThis is absurd!\u201d grumbled the Doctor. \u201cI can\u2019t fix the chronal surge in this state!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cChronal surge?\u201d asked Pauline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAn energy wave washing over time and space and plucking people or things out of their native point in space-time and putting them into a new one in either their past or future,\u201d explained Lurra Rus. \u201cThere\u2019s a series of them happening in an event the Time Lords call the Grouping.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cNobody\u2019s gone missing from what I can tell,\u201d said Peach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe were trying to stay ahead,\u201d explained the Doctor, \u201cbut I overshot the target. Navigational systems need a complete overhaul!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The fight still raged on, but Mario, Amy, and Donkey Kong were starting to tire out. \u201cI can\u2019t believe this!\u201d complained Donkey Kong. \u201cThis is how I go out?!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cCome on, DK!\u201d retorted Amy. \u201cShow some positivity!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI AM being positive! I\u2019m positive we\u2019re gonna get a permanent game over!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cNot while I\u2019m breathing!\u201d replied Mario. That was when the earth shook. \u201cH-hey! What\u2019s going on?!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cSomething\u2019s digging its way up here!\u201d yelped Amy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe Banandium Root?\u201d muttered Donkey Kong. Something then erupted from the ground. It was metallic and had a huge rotary drill on the front like one would see on an oil rig. The vehicle then tilted to its side and opened a ramp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWhat on earth-?!\u201d yelped Peach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe better check on them!\u201d suggested Pauline. Lurra Rus then spotted the Doctor\u2019s worried face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201c\u2026Doctor?\u201d she asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201c\u2026They\u2019ve been buried for millions of years,\u201d whispered the Doctor. \u201cSo they were caught up in the chronal surge! Oh no!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cDoctor, what\u2019s wrong?\u201d asked Pauline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cCome on! We\u2019ve got to get our friends away from that mining ship!\u201d declared the Doctor as she broke cover. \u201cAMY! AMY, GET AWAY FROM THERE!\u201d Amy whirled around and saw the Doctor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cCome on!\u201d she called to Mario and Donkey Kong. The three of them rejoined their friends as the Koopas and Kremlings surrounded the mining ship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cDoctor, what\u2019s wrong?\u201d asked Mario. \u201cThey saved our lives!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cDon\u2019t thank them yet,\u201d directed the Doctor grimly. \u201cWe might live to regret it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWhy? Do you know that ship?\u201d asked Amy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201c\u2026A Cyber Driller,\u201d replied the Doctor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cCyber-? \u2026No!\u201d Amy goggled in horror as she realized the implications. A door opened from the side of the Cyber Driller and out stomped silver humanoids with metal helmets and a handle on each side of their head going up from the ear, turning ninety degrees, and joining on the top of the head. Their leader\u2019s handles were painted black. Amy then called out to the Koopas and Kremlings. \u201cGET AWAY FROM THEM! THEY\u2019RE DANGEROUS!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cBite me, Pinky!\u201d retorted a Boomerang Bro. \u201cWe can handle these robots!\u201d They all readied their weapons!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThey\u2019re gonna be slaughtered!\u201d gasped Amy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThere\u2019s nothing we can do, Amy,\u201d replied the Doctor. \u201cAnd I think we just found who got caught up in the chronal surge.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThem,\u201d realized Amy. \u201c\u2026They seem\u2026different to the ones I met.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cYes, they do seem to take their design cues from their Neomorph cousins,\u201d remarked the Doctor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cDoctor, Amy, what ARE they?\u201d asked Lurra Rus. The leader of the handle-headed creatures had locked eyes with the Doctor and ran bio-scans as the Doctor revealed who they were.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201c\u2026Cybermen!\u201d she hissed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
