As she worked aboard the Endeavor, Arsha kept thinking about what Keshnakh said. It was late during the night after she got ready for bed that her mind raced about her non royal lovers. Falnii, Lardeth, and Foresna left the bathroom in their nightwear and spotted Arsha. “…Foxy?” asked Lardeth. Arsha snapped out of her thoughts.

“Yes?” she asked.

“Arsha, you got that look again,” remarked Foresna.

“…That look?”

“The look you get when you have something on your mind,” explained Falnii. Arsha sighed.

“I need to ask you all something,” she explained. “Not just you three, but Malnar and Gorfanth too.” She headed over to the comms. “Bridge, get me the Belsnath Citadel, preferably the Under-Queen herself.”

“Will do,” answered the night Communications Officer. She had to wait a few minutes before a response came through.

“…llo?” mumbled Malnar’s voice.

“Hey, Bonfire,” said Arsha.

“Foxy!” cheered Malnar, waking up almost instantly. It then sounded like she shouted away from the comms. “Hey! Hooves! Get over here! Arsha’s calling!”

“Arsha?!” called Gorfanth’s distant voice. His hooves could be heard getting closer. “Hey! Foxy!” he said when he was near the comms. “How are things?!”

“Gorfanth, Foresna, Falnii,” said Arsha, “I need to ask you three something. Do you feel overshadowed?” Though she couldn’t see Malnar and Gorfanth’s faces, she could tell that everyone was goggling at her.

“What brought this on?” asked Gorfanth.

“I think I can provide the context,” remarked Falnii. “The four of us attended a masquerade ball with a bit of a play in the middle of it.”

“Wait, even Foresna?!” chuckled Malnar. “Was this the Fae’s Adventure Masquerade? He must have spent the whole night complaining how he couldn’t find you three!

“Actually, I found them right off the bat,” replied Foresna.

“I was the hero fighting against two villains,” continued Falnii, “and Keshnakh mentioned that Foresna, Gorfanth, and I weren’t as talked about as you, Arsha, and Lardeth.”

“So, I need to know, do you feel like the three of us are overshadowing you?” asked Arsha. “I mean, you fought as hard as us.”

“Arsha, we’re remembered where it matters,” replied Falnii.

“Our friends, you, Lardeth, Malnar, our families, our homes,” said Foresna, “you’ve been singing our praises.”

“And our immediate social circles are making sure,” continued Gorfanth, “that we’re immortalized in some fashion, and it doesn’t need to be as grand as yours. I mean, the most extravagant immortalization I got was my portrait. …Speaking of which, you should be getting a print of it and Malnar’s portrait, as well as closeups of us soon.”

“Arsha, we care that you, Lardeth, and Malnar care about us, not a few high class mucky-mucks,” assured Foresna.

“We still want to spend the rest of our lives with you three,” said Falnii. Arsha smiled.

“Thanks, you guys,” she said. “I guess that part of me hasn’t changed.”

“Nor would we want it to,” replied Malnar. “That’s one of the reasons we all love you.” The conversation then went to more pleasant topics as everyone decided to update one another on what was going on. It lasted a good hour before they all had to go to bed. Once the call ended, Arsha went to sleep feeling much better about all her lovers.

A few days later, Arsha and Lardeth were asked to join Galnyar in seeing Rellmeer and her harem off. They were on a thick branch that was connected to another in a fashion that seemed familiar to Arsha, but she couldn’t place it. “It’s gonna be weird not calling you an Empress,” Arsha muttered to Rellmeer.

“I’m sure you can adapt to it,” assured Rellmeer. “I must thank you for joining me in seeing me off.”

“It’s our pleasure, Lady Rellmeer,” replied Lardeth. “I wish you and your girls well in your retirement and-” His wishes were interrupted by a noise. “…Arsha, do you…?”

“I think I do,” replied Arsha. “What is that? An engine puffing?” A whistle then blew. “That’s an engines whistle!”

“Where is it…over there!” Lardeth pointed at the branch connected to theirs. A steam engine Mechanica man was coming! It looked proportional to a Standard Gauge one!

“A train?!” yelped Arsha. “When did you guys make a train?!”

“About a month ago,” explained Rellmeer. “When I was running the Republic, I had commissioned a train to be built for my family. Right now, the only line built runs from the Capital Tree to my private palace.”

“And after the ball,” continued Galnyar, “I proposed that we create our own railways. Right now, we have one gauge of train, Fae Standard, but we’ve got two smaller gauges and two larger ones being planned, ready to connect all areas of the Drelda Forest. That’s the other reason why Realmfleet’s here.”

“We need the techniques and training to construct our railways,” Felfar went on. “Stations, rolling stock, engines, giving some of said engines life, rail lines, we need to learn. I understand you’re quite the railfan.”

“Oh, I am, indeed!” replied Arsha. “And if there’s anything I don’t know, I know who to ask!” The new Fae Standard engine then stopped in front of them.

“Ready to go, Lady Rellmeer?” he asked.

“I am, indeed,” replied Rellmeer.

“We’ll help with the bags,” offered Lardeth.

“There’s a lot,” warned Felfar.

“We can handle it!” assured Arsha. The conductor and porter stepped out of the coaches and attended to the bags with Arsha, Galnyar, and Lardeth helping them. As the engine went around to the other end of his train, Rellmeer and her harem boarded the coaches with Rellmeer and Felfar sitting next to one another at the coach behind the engine. The porters went back inside the coaches and the conductor blew his whistle and waved his flag. The engine blew his whistle and the train set off with Rellmeer and her harem waving goodbye to Arsha, Lardeth, and Galnyar.

“I can see why you’re a railfan,” chuckled Galnyar once everyone stopped waving. “There’s a certain magic about them, one that can’t be fully accessed unless you see one for yourself.”

“Or ride one,” chuckled Arsha. “Now, whatever help you need, I’m your gal!”

“I knew I could count on your help!” said Galnyar. “It’s time to bring the Fae Republic into a new era of transportation!”

The ball was in full swing and packed with people, all wearing masks that obscured their features. As everyone moved off to find their partners, Foresna looked around and found a corner with people. He approached them and tapped four of them on the shoulder. “Geniuses of reconstruction,” he said.

“Masters of the Realms,” replied one in Lardeth’s voice.

“The royal court,” said a second in Arsha’s voice.

“Make way for heroes,” the last finished in Falnii’s voice. Foresna sighed happily.

“We told you it wouldn’t take long,” chuckled Lardeth as he took Foresna’s hand.

“I know,” replied Foresna as they danced. Arsha and Falnii danced together as the conversation went on. “I just don’t like hiding my face. It feels…weird.”

“Goes against Halfling teachings, hm?” chuckled Arsha.

“Exactly.”

“Well, we’ll reveal ourselves once the adventure part is over,” assured Falnii. The two pairs then changed partners so that Falnii danced with Foresna and Lardeth danced with Arsha. “After that, we can gaze as long as we want into one another’s eyes and kiss as much as we want.”

“Now that sounds fun!” purred Foresna.

“You know, I heard that this ball’s adventure has TWO villains,” mused Lardeth.

“Two?” asked Arsha as they all changed partners again, so Arsha was dancing with Foresna and Lardeth was dancing with Falnii. “That’s a new one.”

“I wonder what prompted having two?” quizzed Falnii.

“I don’t know,” replied Lardeth. “All I know are their titles, the Singer and the Puppet Master.”

“Well, this is sure to be an interesting-!” Falnii’s sentence was cut off as two wicked looking people opened the ballroom’s windows and jumped into the room. One was an Orc woman with spiky armor and a skull embedded on each of her shoulder armor’s long spike. The other was an Elf man in a dark Bard’s outfit with his lute laced with axe heads. The Orc woman grabbed Keshnakh and held a blade near the new Empress’ throat. The Elf man then grabbed Lardeth and got his arm around his waist before he strummed his lute and launched into a song.

You may have heard of one like me!

He prances and dances and sings with glee!

Wherever there’s strife, the Singer is there!

He slaughters and slays with such merry flair!

I sing this song with all my breath

Take heed! For this interlude ends with your death!” The Orc woman appeared to be listening to one of the skulls on her shoulders. She then turned to Keshnakh, who was enjoying being the hostage for this adventure.

“My boy on my right here says you’re a spineless coward!” Her attention was then grabbed by the other skull. “…No, I will NOT say that about her! That’s disgusting!” She then turned to the partiers. “Which of you will try and save them?!” she challenged as the Elf Bard tied Lardeth and Keshnakh together in long ropes. “Come on! Who will take on Thurnak the Puppet Master and Tulf the Singer?!”

“Pardon me!” called Falnii. She then approached the two. “Villains like you won’t succeed here!”

“Ah, a hero tries to take center stage!” laughed Thurnak. “Come on, then!” Falnii took her mask off and was given a prop sword. She then pointed her sword at the two villains and made a “come here” gesture. The two then charged at her, beginning the fight. The crowd cheered for Falnii as her blade flashed and she threw sparks that were harmless but gave illusions of offensive spells being cast at the villains.

“Give it to ‘em, Fluffy!” cheered Arsha. “Give it to-!” She didn’t watch where her hands were going, so she managed to sock herself in the jaw. “OW!” she yelped. Falnii showed no signs of letting up, then her blade locked with Thurnak.

“You see these two lads here to my left and my right? They have a very specific plan for you and I’m-!” She then stopped and listened to the skulls. “…Oh! Right, right, right!” She returned her attention to Falnii. “They just want me to shut up and kill you!” She then shoved Falnii back, freeing their weapons and allowing the fight to continue. This time, it was Tulf’s turn to lock weapons with Falnii. He sang again.

Come join us in song and we will have fun!

The blood, it will run and run and run!

She fights! She fights! For what could it be?

The Zephyr must want to dance with me!” The song ended and Falnii shoved the Tulf back. The fight resumed, then Falnii slashed across Tulf’s chest. He cried out in pain, then collapsed to his knees. He then looked up. “My final song is rather long, it’s time for me to take a bow…on second thought, just do it now.” She then stabbed him, and he fell to the floor. After that, it was just her and Thurnak. Thurnak laughed and turned to one of her skulls.

“That’s a good one, that is!” she said. Annoyance then crossed her face and she turned to the other skull. “The Singer isn’t laughing because he’s bloody DEAD, you idiot!” The duel continued, then Falnii slashed across Thurnak’s chest. She fell to her knees and turned to her skulls. “Boys, how could you let this happen?!” She then listened to them, then laughed. “Ah, funny to the end! I’ll miss you guys!” Falnii then stabbed her and she fell to the floor. Falnii then cut Lardeth and Keshnakh free. Keshnakh ran to Galnyar’s arms as they took off their masks. Lardeth simply swooned in Falnii’s arms.

“Oh, brave Zephyr!” he said. “Thank you so much for saving me from those fiends!”

“It was nothing, my Lord,” replied Falnii in a heroic voice. “They were no challenge whatsoever!” She then planted a passionate kiss on Lardeth’s lips, prompting the crowd to cheer. Everyone then took off their masks as the villains stood up. Keshnakh rejoined the group, and the players bowed.

“I know it’s unusual to have more than one villain,” called Keshnakh, “but this was the perfect opportunity to experiment with the idea of a hero struggling against more than one threat. Given what they went through during the Final War, Arsha and her lovers seemed to be an obvious choice. Now, we’ve all heard about Arsha, our future Over-king here,” she pointed to Lardeth, “and we all saw Malnar’s coronation and got to know the name of Gorfanth,” Arsha arched an eyebrow, “but what about the other two? We’ve never heard their names…until now! So, everyone, cheer for our hero and our future Over-king’s lover, Falnii Loftanaf!” The crowd cheered and clapped, but as she did so, Arsha became lost in thought.

The throne room was lined with the nobles of Fae Society. Galnyar went down the aisle and approached the throne. A priestess stood by with the Codex in her hands. Rellmeer stood opposite of the priestess with a crown of leaves in her hands. Galnyar approached Rellmeer and knelt in front of her. “Long afore,” began Rellmeer, “the Fae were a cutthroat people, great houses vying for control of the Republic. Buried were concepts of unity and love. Now, out of love for the people, my son hath stepped up to the challenge of ruling the Republic. Galnyar, son of Embrek and Myself, dost thou swear to stay true to thy new life as Emperor?”

“This I doth swear,” replied Galnyar.

“Dost thou promise to protect thy people and defend them from threats without and within?”

“This I doth promise.”

“Dost thou wish to remember the wisdom of rulers before thee?”

“This I doth wish.” Rellmeer then placed the crown on his head.

“Rise now and take thou the Oath.” Galnyar stood up and turned to the priestess, placing his left hand on the Codex and raising his right. Before the priestess began the oath, Keshnakh went down the aisle and knelt in front of Rellmeer. Rellmeer retrieved a second crown of leaves. “Keshnakh, daughter of Gurtagh and Wulmafu, wife of my son, dost thou swear to stay true to thy new life as Empress?”

“This I doth swear,” replied Keshnakh.

“Dost thou promise to protect thy people and defend them from threats without and within?”

“This I doth promise.”

“Dost thou wish to remember the wisdom of rulers before thee?”

“This I doth wish.” Rellmeer then placed the crown on her daughter-in-law’s head.

“Rise now and take thou the Oath.” Keshnakh stood up and waited behind Galnyar to take the oath.

“I, Galnyar Almaydia, do solemnly swear,” began the priestess.

“I, Galnyar Almaydia, do solemnly swear,” repeated Galnyar.

“That I will execute my duties as Emperor of the Fae Republic faithfully.”

“That I will execute my duties as Emperor of the Fae Republic faithfully.”

“I will uphold the laws and dreams of my people.”

“I will uphold the laws and dreams of my people.”

“I will care for those that are in dire straits.”

“I will care for those that are in dire straits.”

“With the help of the now Mortal Divine Ones, I will not let evil corrupt my judgement.”

“If necessary, I will give my life to save my people, should disaster strike.”

“If necessary, I will give my life to save my people, should disaster strike.” He then removed his hand as the priestess held the Codex in front of Keshnakh. She then placed her hand on the Codex and raised the other.

“I, Keshnakh Almaydia, do solemnly swear,” began the priestess.

“I, Keshnakh Almaydia, do solemnly swear,” repeated Galnyar.

“That I will execute my duties as Empress of the Fae Republic faithfully.”

“If necessary, I will give my life to save my people, should disaster strike.” She removed her hand from the Codex and both she and her husband were directed to sit upon the throne.

“I now pronounce you Emperor and Empress of the Fae Republic!” called the priestess. As the crowd cheered, Galnyar and Keshnakh looked lovingly in one another’s eyes before kissing. That kiss prompted louder cheers of joy.

The ball would be held five days later. Recent years called the event as an Adventurous Masquerade. The people attending would have a mysterious escort and would dance until they found their lovers. They would say a code phrase as they looked for their lovers while dancing with everyone else. Once all parties had found one another, a villain would try and capture one of the guests and a hero would dash into the ballroom and fight the villain. Once the villain is slain and unmasked, the hero unmasks, then the guests unmask themselves. With their costumes a secret, the ball could last throughout the night. Right now, Keshnakh was trying to figure out who would be her escort. Arsha was giving some suggestions. “What about Quenthem?” asked Arsha.

“Quenthem?!” yelped Keshnakh. “You want me to ask Quenthem Roltam to be my escort to the ball?!”

“It’s just a suggestion.”

“With all due respect, it’s a bad suggestion! Number one, you used to go out with him. Number two, he’s got two left feet. Number three, and the most important point of them all, his eyes just wig me out!”

“And you don’t want a person with crazy tiny eyes escorting you.” Arsha simply rolled her eyes and chuckled. “Well, what about Lady Drulyar? She’s cute, she’s a very good dancer, I never dated her…and she has very big eyes.”

“Yeah, but her legs bother me.”

“Which ones?”

“The ones running down her tail!” Arsha just scoffed in disbelief.

“You are VERY picky when it comes to appearances!”

“And, sometimes, your definition of attractiveness frightens me!”

“Look, it’s a masquerade! You won’t see behind the mask or a lady’s skirts anyways! Okay, how about Lardeth?”

“…I was kind of thinking Foresna.” Arsha winced.

“He…declined attending.”

“What, why? You told me he’s a good dancer!”

“He’s not all that wild about masquerades.”

“It’s tradition, Farm Boy!” Lardeth wheedled to Foresna as they spoke in the guest room. “You should appreciate that!”

“I DO appreciate it,” replied Foresna, “but I STILL won’t go!”

“Why not?” asked Falnii’s voice as she entered the room.

“Falnii, I don’t want to have to spend the entire night looking for you guys! It’s just not fun!”

“But it’s like a mystery!”

“When was the last time you saw me enjoy a mystery of any kind, hm?!”

“Come on, you’re not gonna spend the night looking for us!” argued Lardeth.

“You know how I am with deductions!”

“I hate to say it, Arsha,” continued Keshnakh, “but with our history, Lardeth wouldn’t be a good escort for me. We…didn’t exactly part on good terms.”

“Oh dear, that DOES limit your options,” said Arsha. “Maybe I can get Foresna to come along.”

“Not you too!” protested Foresna.

“Look, all you need to do,” urged Arsha, “is dress up, bring Keshnakh to the ball, head to the corner, and say your code phrase to those in the area. We’ll be there.”

“But I’m not gonna spend the whole night dancing with you three!”

“You won’t be dancing with strangers for long. Come on, for us?” Foresna sighed.

“…Fine, I’ll do it,” he finally grumbled.

“YAY!” Arsha hugged him. “You’re the best! See you later!” She then headed down the hall.

“…The things I do for my lovers,” he grumbled.

The Endeavor had arrived at the outskirts of the Drelda Forest. Shalvey made a call to the outpost. “Drelda Forest, this is the Endeavor, registry CRS-2784. We’re requesting permission to enter the Capital Tree.”

“Standby while we verify your clearance,” replied the Fairy man running Traffic Control. They waited for a minute. “Clearance accepted. You are granted permission to enter the Capital Tree. Please wait until the shrinking spell does its work.”

“Understood, Drelda Forest.” Golden mist then flowed over the ship, making Endea shudder.

“Everything all right?” asked Arsha.

“Shrinking spells always make me feel weird,” explained Endea. “Like I’m losing a lot of my hull.” The spell then finished and the Endeavor and the people within her were now of Fae proportions.

Endeavor, you are cleared for Landing Bough 2 and are assigned flight path 1,” called Traffic Control. “Welcome to the Capital Tree.”

“Thank you, Drelda Forest,” replied Shalvey. Nazay got the flight path and followed it to the Landing Bough.

Once the ship landed, Arsha, Lardeth, Falnii, and Foresna headed to the castle. Rellmeer wanted to meet them. The guard led them to the throne room. When they arrived, Rellmeer stood up, dressed in robes of the darkest of greens. The four visitors winced and Arsha prepared a spell for her and Foresna’s clothes. “Not yet,” called Rellmeer. “Save that for the actual event.” It was clear that the Fae Empress was crying earlier.

“I’m sorry for the loss of your Emperor,” said Arsha.

“Embrek was a great man,” supplied Lardeth.

“It was he who supported me forming my personal harem,” sighed Rellmeer as she looked out the window, remembering him. “He was also a strong warrior. …It saddens me that he had to leave the Mortal Realms in such a manner.”

“Then the poison Jansha introduced into him,” asked Foresna, “couldn’t be extracted?”

“I’m afraid there was no cure,” mumbled Rellmeer. “It was drezzurnine. He fought hard against it. At least he could see the dawn of this new Age and died peacefully after that.”

“Embrek was a great Emperor,” said Arsha. “There will never be another like him.”

“Perhaps my son will be greater, now that the foundations for his rule are set in place.”

“Your son? The rumors are true?” asked Lardeth. “You’re abdicating?”

“I’m afraid my emotions are all over the place. I can’t rule effectively and my desire to simply hide away with my harem is too strong. Galnyar will take over as Emperor and his wife, Keshnakh, will be his Empress. I know I asked you to attend Embrek’s funeral, but could you attend Galnyar’s coronation and the subsequent ball?”

“My Lady,” replied Arsha, “we’d be honored.”

“Thank you, Arsha” said Rellmeer. “It would mean the world to my son to have a familiar face comforting him.”

The mourners, dressed all in dark green robes, had gathered by the hearse containing Embrek’s body. It was cast with preservation spells which would only wear off once he was buried. A team of eight tamed ants were tasked with pulling the hearse as the mourners followed on. Those of the Fae were prepared to fly overhead. Rellmeer was at the head of the procession, and they all left the Tree, two by two, from a door where the ground met the tree. The procession went to another tree about an hour’s march for someone a Fae’s size. There was a hole already dug into the earth. Everyone gathered around the open grave and the pallbearers opened the hearse, taking the body out and putting it onto a stretcher. They carried the body to the grave and lowered it down. “When one of the Fae is born, there is much joy,” said the priest. “When one of the Fae is taken from these Mortal Realms, there is a deep sadness. Emperor Embrek Almaydia has seen many an event and fought in two wars, knowing great sorrow and joy. He has had a long and happy life and now his soul answers the call to the Heights of the After-realm, where he may forever know peace. We return his body to the earth from which all life began. Rest well, Embrek Almaydia, Emperor of the Republic of the Fae.”

“Rest well, Emperor Embrek,” said the mourners. Two of the ants that pulled the hearse were then directed to move the dirt over Embrek’s body. Once the grave was filled, the priest cast his hands to the sky.

“Hear us, O Earth!” he called. “Accept now this body so that nature can flourish!”

“Hear us, O Earth!” repeated the mourners. Rellmeer felt a hand on each shoulder. Felfar and her son, Galnyar, were reassuring her in silence. She placed a hand over each of theirs and shut her eyes, letting the tears fall.

After the funeral, Galnyar wandered the castle, stopping at the throne room and staring at the throne. “…It will still be too soon after his death,” he mumbled.

“Maybe,” replied a woman’s voice. It was his wife, Keshnakh, an Orc/Zephyr woman. “You could just leave the throne to someone else,” she suggested. “No one will think ill of you if you do.”

“…I can’t do that. Not while Mother needs to know that the Republic’s in good hands. …Besides, it would annoy Thendar that he wasn’t chosen. Anything to spite him.” Keshnakh smiled.

“Yeah, the guys’ a bit of an ass. Why didn’t your parents exile him already?”

“He wasn’t dangerous enough. The only thing that would prompt his exile is for him to try and kill me during the coronation. …Yeah, that’s not a depressing thought.”

“Why does he stay anyways?”

“He provided us the space needed to keep Arsha safe during her coma. Now that he’s served his usefulness (pardon my rather villainous speech), one slip-up will be all that’s needed to banish him. With the amount of supporters we have, we won’t have a civil war on our hands.” Keshnakh arched an eyebrow.

“…‘WE have’?” she repeated.

“We ARE a team, are we not?” asked Galnyar. “You and I will rule the Republic together, yes?”

“I didn’t think I had ANY supporters.”

“Oh, nonsense!” He then tilted her chin up with just his pointer so he could look directly at him. “My beloved Keshnakh, you DO have supporters. The ladies of the Fae Republic are proud that someone that ISN’T a Fae is going to command them. They believe that you will help the Fae Republic in relations with the outside world. Surely word has reached you.”

“I only heard it when they said that to my face.” Galnyar then remembered her childhood and smiled.

“I assure you, they not only said that to your face, but behind your back as well. They DO support you, both publicly and privately.” Keshnakh sniffled as tears fell from her eyes. She hugged her husband and cried happy tears; a heavy weight finally lifted from her shoulders. Galnyar hugged her back and they just stood there in silence.

The day after Malnar’s coronation came too quickly for Arsha’s taste. Sadly, she wasn’t in a position to offer Malnar a lift. What made it worse for her was that she knew of Gorfanth staying behind too. She was talking to him before she had to return to the Endeavor. “You’re sure you need to stay?” she asked.

“I know I helped in my home’s reconstruction,” replied Gorfanth, “but Malnar will need help too and I need to learn a few more things about royal life. I can’t exactly do that on the Endeavor. I’m sorry, but I need to stay here.” Arsha sighed.

“I guess I’ll see you later,” she mumbled. Gorfanth then took her into his embrace. They hugged for a good minute. Just then, Malnar found them.

“Can I get in on this?” she called. Arsha and Gorfanth saw her, then they opened the embrace to let Malnar in. She joined and smiled. “…I’m gonna miss you, Foxy,” she mumbled.

“I’ll miss you both, Bonfire, Hooves,” replied Arsha. They all sighed with a mix of happiness and longing. The hug then ended and Malnar looked up to Gorfanth.

“I’ve already got my Queen’s Portrait,” said Malnar, “now it’s time for yours.” Gorfanth winced.

“Do I need to?” he asked.

“If I had to suffer through holding a pose for hours on end, so do you.” Arsha laughed a bit at Malnar’s teasing.

“Very well,” muttered Gorfanth. Arsha stepped back, holding their hands for as long as possible.

“Goodbye, Malnar and Gorfanth,” she said. “I’ll see you soon!”

“Goodbye, Arsha,” bid Malnar and Gorfanth together. Their fingers finally slid off hers. Arsha turned quickly so she wouldn’t be tempted to stay forever. She still had assignments for Realmfleet.

Arsha returned to the ship, a little saddened and eagerly awaiting the next time she would see her Under-realm lovers again. Lardeth, Foresna, and Falnii were waiting by the landing ramp. They saw her face and hugged her. “We miss them already,” sighed Lardeth.

“And then you have your own coronation,” muttered Arsha. “Then you and Falnii will be leaving us.”

“We’ll come back to you when you’re Queen,” assured Falnii. “Our separation will only be temporary.”

“She’s right,” agreed Foresna. “You and I will still be together.” Arsha chuckled.

“Yeah, I do have you for the entire trip.” She then recentered her thoughts. “For now, we need to leave for the Drelda Forest. I’ll be on the bridge.” Arsha ended the hug and headed to the bridge.

She sat in the Captain’s Chair and looked around at her bridge crew, smiling at how they displayed courage during the Final War both when she was on the bridge and when she was absent. She then looked to Shalvey. “Ms. Shalvey, what’s the word?” she asked.

“We’re cleared to leave the Citadel,” reported Shalvey. “We can go on your order.”

“Mr. Nazay, set course for the Under-to-Over Realmgate, then take us to the Drelda Forest’s Capital Tree,” ordered Arsha.

“Course laid in,” reported Nazay.

“Nice and easy.”

The Endeavor fired up its engines and rose into the air, retracting its landing struts and raising its landing ramp. It went higher and higher, then turned southwards to the Realmgate floating above Realmgate City once again.

Malnar and Gorfanth saw the ship depart from the landing pad and waved goodbye until they lost sight of it. Malnar then rubbed her arm. Gorfanth saw this and placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder. “We’ll see them again,” he promised. “We’ve lost Arsha once and she came back to us all. This will be nothing compared to what Oyed did to us.”

“It’s because of what he did that makes me miss her even more,” mumbled Malnar. “After he hurt her, I was about ready to fall into despair without her. I know you and the others were in the same boat, but still…”

“Well, this time, Oyed’s not part of the equation. We know she’s in perfect health and we’ll see her again once she is crowned Queen and Foresna learns of his future duties.” Malnar nodded, then a wicked grin crossed her face.

“Speaking of a consort’s future duties as King, there’s something we need to get out of the way.” Gorfanth arched an eyeridge.

“And that is?”

“Well…how did Daddy put it…society wants us to start our reign looking good.” Gorfanth got the hint, and a look of panic crossed his snout.

“Wait a minute-!” he gulped.

“Come on, Hooves, if I needed to suffer through a portrait sitting, so do you!”

“But I’m not King yet!”

“I wasn’t exactly Queen when I had mine done! Come on, Hooves!” Malnar grabbed one of the ends of his belt and led him away. Gorfanth didn’t resist. There was no point to it.

Arsha sat in her ready room as the ship traveled through the Realmgate Vortex. She lightly stroked her desk as if it were a pet, her thoughts looking towards the future. The door chime then rang. “Come in,” she called. Bashoon then came in.

“You wanted to see me, Captain?” she asked.

“I did, Bashoon. Tell me, why did you turn down Penshek’s offer of being his Secretary of Goblin Finances?”

“…I saw no real growth in that position. I have a bit of a wanderlust, and that position won’t satisfy it. I was thinking that, after Realmfleet, I’d be a Freelance Captain. The Realm Freelance Board’s always looking for experienced officers.”

“You’ll need training in that regard,” remarked Arsha. “You see, I called you in for a reason. You know that, once our Drelda mission’s done and Lardeth’s crowned, I have one last mission in the Mid-realm? In Largandra, no less? Once the Largandra mission’s done, I’m having my Tour’s End Ceremony. I have been thinking hard about who would take my place…and I can think of no better person than you, Bashoon Barmek.”

“…ME?!” yelped Bashoon as the weight of Arsha’s declaration sunk in. “You want ME to-?!”

“I only have a few of the bridge crew remaining once the Largandra mission’s done,” explained Arsha. “Denstra and her spouses will leave, Shalvey and Thangred will be getting married and moving to Varshenta Beach, Dalengor’s gonna move to Rokanth and find someone, Nazay’s heading back to the Regatim Oasis to marry Merrim, Elmar already left us, and Thengo’s gonna be establishing a counseling practice here. Now, Anya’s gonna be taking Thengo’s place and she’ll be marrying Malak, Laverda’s staying behind, Falnimam will be coming to the Mid-realm to marry Melandra and move onto the ship with him and he’ll be the new Chief Engineer, Orthena’s still the Chief Science Officer, Endea’s staying, and Marshii will be CMO for a little while longer.”

“I heard about Denstra and her spouses leaving,” replied Bashoon. “Dad was cussing up a storm when Jaltor told him the news. And I kind of figured Endea would stay. I mean, she IS the Endeavor. …In fact, if it’s possible, I WOULD like to make her my First Officer.”

“Well, the successor DOES have the right to choose their First Officer. I think she’d make an excellent one for you. Now, I still need to work with Rokalla to write the Commission Letters for the new Bridge Crew.”

“Understood. Thank you for the opportunity, Captain. Let me tell you, you’re gonna be leaving big shoes to fill.”

“I think you’ll fill them nicely in peacetime.”

“In the meantime, I still have a few odd jobs to do.”

“All right then, I’ll let you go. Dismissed.” Bashoon saluted and smiled, then left the room. Arsha smiled happily. “Bashoon Barmek, you’re gonna go far!” she said to herself.

3 Realms 6-11

The day finally came. Malnar was in front of the throne room doors, vaguely hearing her future subjects chattering amongst themselves. She flapped her hands in nervousness, then took in a breath and steeled herself. The doors opened to reveal all the Under-realm Delegations lining an aisle to the throne. Sitting in his wheelchair on the throne’s right was Orbak with Elmpam standing behind him. On the throne’s left was the priest with Malnar’s lovers standing by him. One look at her future spouses and Malnar’s confidence increased. She walked down the aisle with strength and pride. Once she was in front of the throne, she stood by Orbak. Orbak began his speech. “My beloved subjects,” he called, “my Queen and I cannot express our pride in you enough. We have all suffered greatly in the Final War. It was an honor to have you all at our side as we fought against evil, and we give the highest of praises to those that resisted the Trinnies while we were separated from you all.”

“Sadly,” called Elmpam, “the time has come for us to step aside for a new Under-monarch. We take great pleasure in abdicating in favor of our daughter, Malnar. She has proven that she can command through both her tour of duty and her actions in the Final War. I can think of no greater woman to be our Under-Queen.”

“Malnar, kneel,” said Orbak. Malnar knelt in front of Orbak. He handed her the scepter he was known for carrying. “Rise and take the Crown,” said Orbak. “Let those that came before you judge your heart.” Malnar rose as Orbak handed the Crown on his head to Elmpam. Elmpam then put the Crown on Malnar’s head. Malnar then felt a pain in her head, the Crown examining her brain.

“Malnar!” called Arsha. She was about to dash to her aid, but the priest held her back.

“This is something a Ruler must do on their own,” he said. “If any of us interfere or if she calls for help before five minutes are up, she will forfeit her claim to the throne.” Arsha and her lovers looked at Malnar in worry. Malnar grit her teeth and muscled through the pain. Soon, it faded and lessened…then it stopped. Orbak smiled.

“The five minutes are up,” he said as he handed her a headache potion.

“Thank you,” she panted. She drank the potion, gagged at the taste, then handed the empty phial back to Orbak before turning to the priest as he held the Codex out. She placed her left hand on the cover and raised her right hand.

“I, Malnar Emboramii, do solemnly swear,” began the Priest.

“I, Malnar Emboramii, do solemnly swear,” repeated Malnar.

“That I will execute my duties as Queen of the Under-realm faithfully.”

“That I will execute my duties as Queen of the Under-realm faithfully.”

“With the help of the now Mortal Divine Ones, I will not let evil corrupt my judgement.”

“If necessary (and I personally hope it never will be in this Age),” even Malnar had to silently agree with that, “I will give my life to save my people, should disaster strike.”

“If necessary, I will give my life to save my people, should disaster strike.”

“I hereby pronounce you Queen of the Under-realm!” he called. Malnar sat on the throne. The priest then turned to the crowd. “Now is the time for the Rulers of the Under-realm to pledge your swords to your Queen!” The Rulers entered the aisle and lined up. They knelt and drew their sword, pointing it to the sky while declaring their service to Malnar. The oaths went like so:

“I, Queen Calandra Narven of the Galdredan Lava Kingdom, do hereby pledge my service and sword to you, Queen Malnar.”

“I, King Alnedar Yerudii of the Morgonthor Trench, do hereby pledge my service and sword to you, Queen Malnar.”

“I, Queen Yurmar Hanthuu of Crelima City, do hereby pledge my service and sword to you, Queen Malnar.” Because of her throat injury, she had to say her pledge in Under-realm Sign Language.

“I, King Esirat of Frigandor, do hereby pledge my service and sword to you, Queen Malnar.”

“I, King Enrel Wenshar of the Actanila Mega-shark Grounds, do hereby pledge my service and sword to you, Queen Malnar.”

“I, Queen Landuii Altror of the Calnthor Merfolk Kingdom, do hereby pledge my service and sword to you, Queen Malnar.”

“I, Queen Endomu Gokurah of the Greshkagh Mountains, do hereby pledge my service and sword to you, Queen Malnar.”

“I, King Endormak Tothen of the Grilthan Forest, do hereby pledge my service and sword to you, Queen Malnar.”

“I, High Priestess Torunath Lundalii of the Haldebor Drider Caves, do hereby pledge my service and sword to you, Queen Malnar.”

“I, Queen Rutalmer Worodai of Realmgate City, do hereby pledge my service and sword to you, Queen Malnar.”

“I, Lord Tomugath Varsek of Falgreth, do hereby pledge my service and sword to you, Queen Malnar.”

“I, Chancellor Penshek Tolshoon of Dwelga, do hereby pledge my service and sword to you, Queen Malnar.”

“I, High Priestess Tanta Kalokat of te Tunatel Trow Cafs, do hereby plesh my serfis and swort to you, Queen Malnar.”

“I, General Dotan Mergotal of the Umbrax Kingdom, do hereby pledge my service and sword to you, Queen Malnar.” Once everyone had made their pledges, they sat back in their seats as Malnar looked over everyone.

“We’ve gone through torture,” she began, “there are no two ways around that. We’ve all lost so much, but we are rebuilding. Why? Because nothing keeps the Under-realm down for long! We bounce back, no matter the damage! We get ourselves to a new normal quicker than the other Realms, if Arsha and my other Out-realmer lovers will pardon the Under-realm pride.” Arsha and her lovers chuckled. “I’m about to do something I don’t think my predecessors, even my parents, ever did; I pledge my sword and service to the Under-realm and her people. Now, the war we’re still rebuilding from was always called the FINAL War. Let’s do whatever we can to make sure we all don’t need to call upon our swords and simply ask for one another’s service. To the Under-realm!”

“To the Under-realm!” called Orbak.

“TO THE UNDER-REALM!” repeated the crowd.

“Hip hip!”

“HUZZAH!”

“Hip hip!”

“HUZZAH!”

“Hip hip!”

“HUZZAH!”

“Ones save the Queen!”

“ONES SAVE THE QUEEN!”

The Endeavor arrived at the Belsnath Citadel and Malnar led her lovers to the throne room. Orbak and Elmpam met them there. “Here she is!” called Elmpam. She gave Malnar a hug from all her arms.

“My daughter, all grown up!” chuckled Orbak. Once Elmpam broke off the hug, Orbak pulled something out of a pouch. It was a gold collar choker with pearls laid onto it. “This was your mother’s choker,” explained Orbak. “She wanted you to at least wear it for your portrait.” Malnar then drew in a breath.

“That’s right, my Royal Portrait!” she groaned.

“Dull as all get out!” agreed Lardeth.

“That’s the Honest-to-Ones truth,” said Arsha. Malnar and Lardeth goggled at her.

“Whenever we have a portrait together,” remarked Lardeth, “the artist doesn’t say so much to you about trying to look happy!”

“That’s because I’m thinking about something else,” explained Arsha, “something much more enjoyable than the tedium of sitting for hours on end while a painter tries to capture my likeness.”

“I know that’s not one of your favorite things of royal life,” remarked Orbak, “but it IS necessary for us. Society wants us to start our reign looking good.” Malnar grumbled but conceded that he was right.

“Oh well, at least it lets me update my wardrobe,” she said. She then got an idea. “Do you think the Royal Painter could do a portrait of me on the south tower’s balcony looking out?”

“Why?” asked the Royal Painter, a Stone Dragon woman.

“Well, I want my kingdom to be in the shot,” explained Malnar. “It would be nice to have the backbone of my Realm be included.”

“I mean, I CAN do it, if you’re certain that’s what you want.”

“I DO want it.”

“In that case, all I need from you is your outfit and when you want to start.”

As Malnar spent the day looking at dresses, Arsha and the rest of her lovers looked over a history book in the library. This one was talking about a Ring of Power and a Magic Sword. Long ago, when such items were numerous, Intrag ordered their creation, using a Shadow Dragon’s fang to construct the sword and treasure from the Drows’ vaults to make the ring. “Look at this,” said Arsha as she pointed out the Ring. The illustration showed it as a golden ring carved to look like a Drow Priestess with rubies for her eyes, charging a great spell, centered around Beginnings and represented by a pearl. Arsha read the text describing it. “‘The Ring of Nal-Mahar was forged within the workshops of the old Drow fortress. Legend has it that the Ring can make the wearer pass into the Invisible After-realm. By rights, the Ring belonged to Nal-Mahar, the Drow High Priestess, but the Drows were lost to time before the Ring was returned to them. It is believed that the Ring would have brought prosperity to the Drows.’”

“Into the After-realm?” shuddered Lardeth. “I’d rather stay away from that until I’m dead.”

“You know, if the Ring is still in the Emboramiis’ possession,” mused Falnii, “maybe Malnar should give it to Tanta.”

“And give the sword back to the Shadow Dragons,” muttered Gorfanth. He pointed out the illustration of the sword he was talking about. The hilt looked like a Shadow Dragon in flight. Its jaws were open and made up the cross-guard while the blade looked like its tongue. “This one’s public knowledge; Thantauglamir, the Shadow Tongue That Slays Evil. Intrag had a Shadow Dragon in his service. He promised to make the Shadow Dragon the new leader of his people but needed a symbol of office for him. The Shadow Dragon tore his fang out and gave it to Intrag. Intrag had his mages and blacksmiths forge a sword out of it and imbue it with spells that targeted only evil beings. When the Shadow Dragon saw the completed sword, he asked for it and leadership of his people. Intrag refused, calling him too evil to wield the sword in his Realm. When Intrag tried to touch the sword, however, the handle burned his hand. The Shadow Dragon took that as his que to take the sword and wrest control of the Under-realm from Intrag. He successfully grabbed the sword without pain and dueled with Intrag. Before the Shadow Dragon could deliver the killing blow, Intrag’s Black Captains burst into the throne room and defended their King, slaying the Shadow Dragon and locking the sword away in the Emboramii Family’s vaults.” Arsha whistled.

“You know, the Mid-realm’s got artefacts of similar nature concerning the Sphinxes and Manticores,” she recalled.

“As does the Over-realm with the Gryphons and Gorgons,” said Lardeth. The doors to the library then opened, revealing one of the maids leading Tanta and Dotan into it.

“Her Highness will be with you shortly,” the maid said to the Drow and Shadow Dragon. “Please wait here.”

“Tank you,” bid Tanta. The maid bowed before leaving. Tanta and Dotan then noticed Arsha and her lovers. “You are Malnar’s lofers, yes?” asked Tanta.

“We are,” confirmed Arsha. “Princess Arsha Royana, at your service.”

“Ah, yes, Dalengor’s best friend,” recalled Dotan.

“She was fery goot in freeink us from Oyet’s service,” purred Tanta.

“As were you,” supplied Dotan.

“Thank you, my Lord and Lady,” replied Arsha.

“Forgive me for saying this,” called Falnii, “but Malnar’s coronation is ten days away. What brings you two here?”

“Malnar sait tat she has gifts for us,” explained Tanta. “We ton’t know why she would want to gif us sometink.”

“Perhaps to acknowledge your part in ending the Final War?” guessed Gorfanth.

“Exactly,” called Malnar’s voice. She entered the library in a new dress and hairpiece, wearing her mother’s choker and carrying a sword slung behind her back with something in her hand.

“Hello, Queen Malnar!” purred Foresna and Arsha together.

“Still a Princess right now,” replied Malnar. She then turned to Tanta and Dotan. “Thank you for coming so quickly.”

“I must atmit confusion,” remarked Tanta. “Why gif us sometink?”

“Because you two already own these things by all rights,” explained Malnar. She opened her hand to reveal a ring. Tanta and Malnar’s lovers gasped as they recognized it.

“Te Rink of Nal-Mahar!” yelped Tanta. “But why-?!”

“It was forged from treasure stolen from Nal-Mahar’s vaults, yes?” asked Malnar. “And Nal-Mahar was your first ancestor, right? Therefore, this ring is yours. And General Dotan, this sword is yours.” She took the sword and sheath off her back and handed it to Dotan.

“Thantauglamir!” he whispered as he recognized the design of the hilt.

“I have a feeling it won’t burn you,” mused Malnar. Tanta and Dotan stared at their respective artefacts, then cautiously took them. Tanta slipped the Ring on her finger and Dotan slung Thantauglamir and its sheath onto his back. He drew it and looked at the blade, marveling at how well maintained it was and registering a comforting warmth from the handle. He sheathed it and knelt at Malnar. Tanta looked at the Ring, moving her hand to see how it looked on her finger, smiled, then knelt as Dotan did.

“Malnar Emboramii,” she said, “I name you Trow frient and blest. My life is at your commant.”

“I name you Shadow Dragon friend and blessed,” supplied Dotan. “My life is at your command.”

“Thank you, both of you,” replied Malnar. The two Leaders then left the library to give their delegation the news. Malnar sighed. “That’s that out of the way, now I gotta spend tomorrow morning for the portrait!”

“It’s gonna look great!” Arsha said in reassurance. Malnar smiled.

“Given the Royal Painter’s talent, yeah, it will.”

Dawn rose on a new day for the Galdredan Lava Kingdom. Elmar and Calandra yawned as they woke up. They put on bathrobes and shuffled off to the dining room for breakfast. Calandra got a cup of coffee as Elmar got his tea. Bacon and eggs were set in front of them, and they ate in a groggy fashion. “Did you sleep well, Your Majesty?” asked the head maid.

“We slept all right,” mumbled Calandra. “Though the sabotage and death of last week didn’t help matters.”

“Still thinking about what those horrid men did?” asked the head maid.

“We’re having vivid nightmares,” replied Elmar. The head butler then came in with a letter in his hands.

“Excuse me, Your Majesties,” he said, “but I believe this letter is of great importance to you.” Calandra opened the letter, and her eyes and smile became wider as she read it.

“Elmar, look!” she called. Elmar looked at the letter, then grinned when he finished reading it.

“We definitely could do with news like that!” he declared.

“Did you read it yet?” Calandra asked the head butler.

“It was addressed to you, Your Majesty,” he replied. “I’m not in the habit of reading mail that does not have my name to it.”

“Go ahead and read this.” Calandra handed the letter to the head butler and maid. They read the letter and grinned.

“Shall I arrange for the Town Crier to make the announcement?” asked the head maid.

“I’d rather tell the Town Crier myself,” replied Calandra.

“Very good, Your Majesty,” said the head maid.

Arsha and her lovers walked around Castle Town. “Malnar, we’ve been walking around aimlessly!” complained Arsha. “Where’s your surprise?!”

“It should be here any minute now,” replied Malnar patiently. Just then, a Kitsune man dressed in the wildest of outfits came up on his horse, ringing his bell.

“The Town Crier?” muttered Gorfanth.

“HEAR YE! HEAR YE! HEAR YE!” called the Crier, a smile on his face. “LET IT BE KNOWN THAT ON THE FIFTIETH DAY OF THE MONTH OF ERBEE OF THE FIRST YEAR OF THE THREE REALMS’ ETERNAL AGE OF UNITY, KING ORBAK EMBORAMII AND HIS QUEEN SHALL STEP DOWN AND PASS THE CROWN TO THEIR ELDEST DAUGHTER, MALNAR!” Malnar’s lovers goggled at her as she smiled and confirmed what he said was true. The Crier continued. “QUEEN CALANDRA AND HER HUSBAND AND ROYAL GUARD CAPTAIN WILL BE GOING TO THE BELSNATH CITADEL TO JOIN THEIR COLLEAGUES IN PLEDGING THEMSELVES TO HER AND THE UNDER-REALM FIVE DAYS IN ADVANCE AND WILL RETURN TWO DAYS AFTER THE CORONATION! PRIME MINISTER GRUMAR WILL BE RUNNING THE KINGDOM DURING THAT TIME!” He spurred his horse on as he rang his bell and continued his announcement.

“You’ve gotta have a voice like a Troll’s to continue that for so long,” muttered Malnar. Her lovers then hugged.

“So that’s the surprise?!” asked Arsha as she beamed at Malnar. “There’s a coronation date?!”

“There’s a coronation date!” replied Malnar. “Now, I’m allowed to invite who I want to see me rise to the throne. So, you five are cordially invited to witness my coronation as Queen of the Under-realm!”

“We’d be honored, Your High…Your Majesty,” replied Lardeth.

“Princess, please, save that for after I’m crowned Queen.”

“Well, we’re gonna have to practice that,” remarked Foresna.

“Why?” asked Gorfanth. “I mean, we’re all getting married once Arsha and Lardeth are crowned.”

“Yeah, but the public needs to get used to it,” answered Foresna.

“Not until I’m crowned!” insisted Malnar. “Until Erbee 50, I’m still a Princess. I’d like to be that until the crown’s on my head.” Foresna decided to drop it. He wasn’t eager to test Malnar. Arsha then remembered something and looked pained.

“I still have reconstruction assignments!” she said. Her lovers then recalled how damaged the Under-realm was, as it was Dr. Borg’s preferred Realm for her empire’s main base of operations.

“Maybe it’s fixed enough that you can be spared a day or two,” muttered Falnii.

“I doubt it,” replied Arsha.

“I’ll need to talk to Daddy and Rokalla,” said Malnar. “They’re the ones in charge of Under-realm Reconstruction right now. They’ll be the best bet for seeing if you can see my rise to the throne.”

As it happened, Orbak and Rokalla were being given a tour of the Galdredan Lava Kingdom to examine the progress and if a full Realmfleet presence was still needed. Rokalla had his legs and eye replaced with cybernetic prosthesis and was using crutches until he could master his new legs. As such, Orbak’s chair was pushed around by their guide, an Elf man. “So, that’s the last kingdom,” mused Orbak.

“It looks like Reconstruction’s coming along better than anticipated,” replied Rokalla.

“Enough to remove a Realmfleet presence from the Under-realm?” asked the guide.

“…Probably a fraction needs to stay,” answered Orbak.

“One eighth, I’d say,” guessed Rokalla. Just then, Malnar and Arsha approached them.

“Ah! There they are! My Heir and her fellow Conquering Hero!” greeted Orbak.

“Hello, Daddy!” replied Malnar as she bent down and hugged him. Orbak then sensed something, fatherly worry taking over.

“Malnar,” he asked as he broke off the embrace, “is something wrong?” Malnar struggled to find the right words.

“Er…Daddy, there’s…um…” she finally sighed. “I want all my lovers to see my ascension.”

“…Is that all that’s on your mind?” Orbak asked only to make sure.

“Yes.” Orbak smiled.

“For a minute, I thought it was something hard.”

“Your father and I,” explained Rokalla, “were just talking about that. We’re gonna leave an eighth of the ships here in the Under-realm, but not all ships need to leave at once. Once the coronation is over, Arsha, you’re needed at the Drelda forest to help repair the Capital Tree. Until then, please, enjoy yourself when Malnar becomes Queen.”

“Then, I can stay?” asked Arsha as hope filled her and Malnar’s eyes.

“Of course!” confirmed Orbak. “We don’t want to separate you and Malnar so soon!”

“Thank you, you two! You have no idea how much that was weighing on us!”

“Then there’s something I need to ask you and Arsha,” said Malnar.

“Ask me? What is it?” quizzed Arsha.

“Is it all right if I bum a ride to the Belsnath Citadel from you?”

“I’m all right with it if Orbak is.”

Of course, I am!” assured Orbak. “Just meet me in the throne room when you get there, all right?”

“Sure thing, Daddy!” promised Malnar.

The Three Realms The Three Realms (Book 6: The Eternal Age of Unity)

3 Realms 6-8

Much like Galya, the public couldn’t believe that the accident that took her father’s life WAS just an accident, not after the sabotage. The media lapped the story up, practically reveling in the fact that someone had died. But, in one of life’s little ironies, the media sensationalism was what ended the ordeal. After her dad’s funeral, Galya walked the streets alone, giving herself time to think. She deliberately didn’t look at the headlines and kept herself deaf to the news broadcasts. As she was concentrating on giving her attention only to the walk home, a hushed whisper entered her ears. “Didn’t you see today’s paper?!” hissed a man. “There’s no way they’ll believe we didn’t cause that!”

“That will change with time, won’t it, Mr. Tuurk?” asked another man.

“Indeed, Mr. Talair,” agreed a third man. “We simply need to lay low for a while.” Galya’s ears twitched as she recognized those names AND the voices. She hid below the window of the warehouse the men’s voices came from.

“I can’t believe this!” hissed the first man. “I wanted revenge against Mechanicas and the public’s out for blood!”

“We’ll get revenge, we promise,” said the second man.

“Once the machines accept their place,” continued the third man, “productivity can return to its original status and violence against machines will stop.” Galya took her hat off and set it and her cane down near the building. She then looked through the windows to see a disheveled Tuurk and Talair talking to an Elf she remembered seeing during the Mechanica Trial. She couldn’t remember the name, but his face could be recognized over the comms.

“All right, but we need to change locations,” urged the Elf. “We can’t risk being spotted.”

“Too late for that,” thought Galya. She retrieved her hat and cane and tore down the street to the nearest public comms. She found the crystal ball sitting there unused and chanted for the operator. A human woman appeared.

“Grand Under-comms,” greeted the woman. “How can I help you?”

“Ma’am, I need you to call the Endeavor,” explained Galya. “Security Clearance Omega Nine Seven Tango, Galya Gronsar.”

“That high a priority, hm?” asked the woman. “All right, connecting now.” Galya had to wait a few minutes. “…Arsha’s taking the call in her ready room. Your call will be monitored for security purposes.”

“Fine,” said Galya. The woman’s face was replaced with Arsha.

“Dame Gronsar!” she greeted. “What can I do for you?”

“I have a lead on the sabotage case!”

“Tuurk and Talair?!” yelped Calandra once Arsha told her, Elmar, and Furnaf of what Galya overheard.

“And the Elf she described was Transhell Ulndrar,” replied Arsha, “a former Engineer aboard the Endeavor.”

“He left us while we were celebrating our victory in the Mechanica Rights Trial,” explained Elmar. “We haven’t heard about him since then.”

“Do you have any images of those three?” Furnaf asked Arsha.

“As a matter of fact, yes,” confirmed Arsha. “You need them for the wanted posters?”

“It would help the public watch out for them.”

“I’ll have the pictures sent over right away.”

“Thank you, Captain.”

“Arsha, you’re still pulling off miracles,” praised Elmar. “I’m glad that didn’t change with my leaving.”

“Just fighting for justice as usual,” replied Arsha.

Not long after their wanted posters were spread all over the kingdom, Transhell, Tuurk, and Talair were found and arrested for sabotage. During the trial, very disturbing details were revealed about what happened after their original losses. For Transhell, after he left the Endeavor in protest of Endea gaining equal rights, he went back not to his wife, but to his mistress. He had an affair with a Succubus and his Elf wife found out, divorcing him. The Succubus, initially thinking that he was unmarried, left him alone. Last he heard, both women had a stable relationship with each other, their other twelve wives, and their husband on the Morgonthor Trenches Minimum Railway, one of the Underwater Railways in operation and boasting Mechanicas of their own. Transhell blamed Mechanicas for his downfall and wanted revenge.

Tuurk and Talair, the former heads of the Realmfleet Financial Board, also had a beef with Endea. They were trying to get rid of her in the month before the last Under-union Festival, but Realmfleet, in anticipation of the Final War breaking out, shot down their goals as they needed all in-service ships to be overhauled. After begrudgingly setting aside the funds needed for Endea’s overhaul and repairs, they asked Gorfanth’s brother Tornoth for assistance, since they learned he didn’t like Realmfleet as he thought they were taking his delivery jobs. After Tornoth was caught, he was bait for a trap set by Realmfleet to arrest Tuurk and Talair. The results of the trial sentenced the two men to life in prison and their wives divorced them on the spot. Like Transhell, they blamed Mechanicas for their downfall and wanted revenge.

The three eventually met when Tuurk and Talair were released from prison on the condition that they would fight for Realmfleet in the Final War. They took orders from the Ship-type Mechanica Captain of the Steamwind, Steawin. They all hated having to take orders from a machine but couldn’t say anything as they liked their freedom too much. They really hated how Steawin endlessly talked about his future with his lover, Endea. They decided that any area where the ship was would suffer their wrath.

The three devised plans for each kingdom that had Mechanicas and waited until the Final War was over to enact them. They learned where the Endeavor was docked and set about enacting their Galdredan Rail Plan. Having worked as a signalman in his youth, Tuurk would be the one to sabotage the points. Talair was the best when it came to casting the invisibility spell, especially over multiple people, and Transhell was very important in infiltration operations during the Final War, so his mastery of the camera scattering spell was most welcome. Talair and Transhell were most useful in procuring the mana barrel from the refinery and Tuurk knew where to puncture the barrel to have it spill all over the tracks.

Once they were caught and found guilty, the trio were sent to Realmfleet Max, boasting tighter security and greater countermeasures against a breakout after Remsu led the one that freed Reb and Melgem. Arsha sat in her quarters alone after the whole debacle. She was glad that the fiasco was over but saddened that someone lost their life before the Eternal Age of Unity really got going. …There was also something in the back of her mind that made her sad. She looked at the duty roster and made the necessary assignments for the ship and the area. She then heard the door chime. “Come in,” she called. Malnar and Gorfanth entered the room.

“Hey, Foxy,” said Malnar. Arsha stood up and hugged Malnar and Gorfanth, confusing the two.

“…Not that I mind, but wha-?” asked Gorfanth.

“When I leave the Under-realm, you two won’t be with me,” mumbled Arsha. The two Under-realmers then understood.

“Arsha, we’ll see each other again,” soothed Malnar.

“Do we even know when you’ll be crowned Queen?” asked Arsha.

“The announcement’s coming tomorrow.” Malnar ended the embrace. “Now, all the rulers of the Under-realm are needed, but you guys are certainly invited. I wouldn’t want you to miss it.” Arsha smiled. It was both a sad one and a happy one.

3 Realms 6-7

The rescue operation went smoothly for everyone. An investigation of the accident yielded similar results to the one Lushar suffered, tampered points and scrambled security cameras. The Controller of the Narrow Standard Railway immediately ordered the points ripped up and replaced with a single set of rails. Drufath’s repairs also went smoothly. This led the RIA and the local police to issue a warning to all engines and railway staff to keep their eyes open for any suspicious activity near the trackside. Points were randomly checked and the authorities conducted sweeps of the line. All Realmfleet ships in the area would be searched as well. Unfortunately, despite their efforts, the engines, and Realmfleet’s, it wouldn’t be enough to catch the saboteur…at least, not until later.

It was early one morning a week later when it happened. Thanks to the lateness of the year, various industries across the southern continent shut down, except the fish industry. Being a volcanic land mass, the natural heat that bubbles from the lava rivers and volcanoes kept the ice from fully forming near the ports. At the harbor near Rootan Station, the workmen were taking full advantage of this. A large shipment of fish had come in. Most would be delivered by rail while the Galdredan Reliable Road Services took care of the rest. Tornoth Steelhorn and his partner, Bulshnak, had just hooked up their horseless carriage to the wagons. They were the go-to drivers for this job because they had such an excellent record when it came to the deliveries of fish. Sadly, that would change with this run. The workmen gave the Minotaur/Orc team the all-clear. “Right, off we go!” said Tornoth. The carriage then moved out of the station, and they got up to speed at once. They went up a road that would eventually lead to a railway crossing. The gates were flashing yellow lights.

“That’s a caution sign if I ever saw it,” muttered Bulshnak. Just then, the lights turned green. “Then again,” chuckled Bulshnak.

“Away we go!” cheered Tornoth. I’m sorry to say that the lights were supposed to turn red. The carriage had made it over the tracks, but the wagons didn’t clear them, thus a goods train slammed into them and pulled the carriage along before derailing from the debris of the wagons. Tornoth and Bulshnak were tossed out of the carriage, their heads hitting the ground hard and causing them to pass out and bleed from the head.

It was the next day when they woke up in the hospital. Their vision was blurry at first and all sound was muffled. Both aspects soon cleared up and they saw Arsha, Gorfanth, Malnar, Calandra, and Galya standing there. “C…Cousin?” mumbled Bulshnak.

“I’m here, Bulshnak,” assured Galya.

“My head!” groaned Tornoth.

“Easy, Tornoth,” soothed Gorfanth in a brotherly tone. “You just suffered a nasty accident.”

“Acci…that’s right, the train!”

“Tornoth, I know this is a stupid question,” said Arsha, “but are you two all right?”

“We’ve been better, your Highness. I personally ache all over and I’m confused as crap! What was a train doing going down the line? That wasn’t the fish train!”

“No, it was an express goods train that needed to get to the shipyards. It suffered a delay and needed to make up for lost time.”

“What was it doing coming at us?” asked Bulshnak. “The gate arms were up, and the crossing lights were green.”

“I think it’s a safe bet the saboteur did this,” replied Calandra. Her face became grim, “Only now, they’ve graduated to murder!”

“Murder?” asked Tornoth. A nasty thought then struck him. “Was there someone near the-?!”

“No, no one was near the line,” assured Galya, although her assurance was tempered by grief. Bulshnak then got an even nastier thought.

“Someone on the engine’s crew?” he asked. Galya drew in a breath.

“…It was a non-Mechanica engine,” she finally revealed. “Number 57646. My father’s engine. He and his usual fireman were on it. The crash embedded a piece of debris right into their heads, killing them.”

“…Uncle Lutak! NO!” wailed Bulshnak as tears welled up in his eyes.

“Dame Gronsar, I promise you, we had no inten-!” began Tornoth. Galya raised a hand and stopped him.

“Mr. Steelhorn, I don’t hold you, Bulshnak, or your company responsible! No one does and no one will. Our contempt is for the monster behind this catastrophe! So, please, give me some peace of mind, you two, and don’t blame yourselves.”

“Rest assured,” Calandra promised the two injured men and railway controller, “no pains will be spared to catch the villain! You have my word! Arsha and I will head back to the crossing to find out what they did!”

“I’m coming with you!” declared Galya. “I want answers on what happened.”

“What do you mean ‘nothing’?!” Galya demanded Officer Furnaf as his investigation was wrapped up.

“With all due respect, Ma’am,” he replied, “I don’t know how much clearer I can be. This wasn’t sabotage.”

“Are you absolutely sure?!” asked Calandra.

“Positive, Your Majesty. My team went over everything with a fine-toothed comb. There was just enough ice and snow that forced the gate’s weights down. There’s really nothing criminal here. It was just extremely bad luck that caused an accident where two men lost their lives.”

“That’s the understatement of the age!” remarked Arsha. “I don’t know if that makes the situation better or worse.”

“I don’t know how many people will accept this,” replied Calandra.

“Well, I’m one of those that doesn’t!” hissed Galya. “An accident following two connected acts of sabotage? There’s no way that’s plausible! Are we even sure the ice wasn’t magically formed?”

“I’m afraid we are,” replied Furnaf. Galya slammed her hand on the crossing gate in frustration and growled.

“Hey, don’t take it out on him!” said Arsha. “We’re just as frustrated!” Galya drew in very deep breaths to try and steady herself.

“If you’ll excuse me,” she finally hissed, “I need to make funeral arrangements.” She headed off to her horseless carriage and drove off.
