Five people in dragon-themed spandex and helmets with black visors obscuring their faces patrolled a ruined, dark city. A man in a green outfit knelt by a person. “…This one’s gone,” he muttered.
“Doesn’t look like many survivors this time,” sighed a woman in yellow
“Come on, we’re already overdue for check-in anyways,” remarked the leader, a woman in red..
“Why did this have to happen?” asked a woman in pink
“Why does anything happen?” replied the last man in blue as the team packed up.
“I don’t like it,” muttered the woman in yellow. “The Stookies haven’t attacked for months.”
“You must have talked with Banza,” remarked the woman in red.
“We’re good here,” reported the man in green.
“Right. Rangers, return to base,” ordered the woman in red. The team hopped onto dragon-themed motorcycles and took off.
In another part of the city, the TARDIS materialized. The Doctor and Amy stepped out and their faces fell with disappointment. “Eye of Orion, huh?” asked Amy sarcastically. “Greenest planet in the universe?”
“I must have missed a time track exit,” muttered the Doctor. “Sorry about that. …You know, this really is most peculiar.”
“What is?” asked Amy.
“The buildings,” replied the Doctor. “I swear I saw them before in their pristine state. I suppose we’d better look around. But be careful.” As the Doctor began to walk away, she heard Amy yelp in surprise and disgust. “I DID say be careful.”
“Yeah, but I wasn’t expecting to step on a policeman’s dead body!” gagged Amy.
“Show me,” directed the Doctor. Amy pointed at the dead policeman. The Doctor knelt down and began examining it. “…Curious,” she muttered. “This one’s still a bit warm. Must be a recent death.”
“There’s a gun in his hand,” observed Amy. The Doctor noticed the angle. She looked at the side of the head and sighed.
“…Poor devil,” she muttered. “Despair took him over. He sought an end to it all.”
“Suicide? …If I sound insensitive, say so, but given the environment…” Amy looked up at the dark sky.
“No, you’re probably right,” sighed the Doctor. “…The gun’s police-issue and so’s the uniform.”
“What about that wallet?” asked Amy. She pointed out a pocket with a wallet sticking out. The Doctor took the wallet and opened it. The ID and Warrant Card said the man was Jonathan Tennant, aged 60, joined the police in January of 5,000,000,123, and that the police force he worked for was the NNYPD.
“NNYPD!” gasped the Doctor. “This was a New New York Policeman!”
“New New York?” asked Amy. “Are we on New Earth?”
“Yes, and now I know why the buildings looked so familiar! I’ve been here in New New York quite a few times!”
“His Warrant Card said he joined in 5,000,000,123.”
“Yes, probably in his 20’s,” remarked the Doctor. “He’s been a policeman for about 40 years, his entire working life.”
“So that would make it…5,000,000,163 this year, right?” guessed Amy.
“Indeed,” said the Doctor.
“So not that far off from when I joined you and William in the TARDIS. You know, New Earth DID quarantine itself five years ago.”
“Quarantine?” asked the Doctor. “Again?”
“Nothing related to diseases,” assured Amy, “but containing some threat that they couldn’t risk letting out among the other colonies.”
“Well, we’re in your time period, just another part of the galaxy,” remarked the Doctor, “so there’s no risk of temporal cultural contamination. Let’s see-.” She stopped herself when she heard motorcycles approaching. Amy picked up on the noise and both she and the Doctor were surrounded by the people in spandex! “…Power Rangers?!” gasped the Doctor. “The Dragon Warrior Iteration?!”
“Who are you?” asked the Red Dragon Ranger.
“We’re travelers,” explained Amy. “We-.”
“You’re a Mobian!” yelped the Pink Dragon Ranger.
“What in blue blazes are you doing on New Earth?!” demanded the Blue Dragon Ranger. “This planet is under strict quarantine!”
“Look, perhaps we can help,” offered the Doctor. “I’m the Doctor and that’s Amy Rose.”
“Amy Rose? Sonic’s fangirl?” asked the Yellow Dragon Ranger. Amy summoned her hammer. “…Yeah, that checks out,” remarked the Yellow Dragon Ranger.
“And you’re a medic like me?” asked the Green Dragon Ranger.
“Well, a scientist of all trades, but I do have medical knowledge, yes,” said the Doctor.
“You better come with us, then,” said the Red Dragon Ranger.
“Wait, what about this poor man?!” asked Amy as she pointed out the late Officer Jonathan Tennant. The Blue Dragon Ranger’s shoulders slouched and he examined the body.
“…I’m sorry, Grandpa Jonny,” he sighed once he finished. He looked up at the Doctor and Amy. “I doubt you two did it. The evidence points to suicide.”
“You called him Grandpa-,” recalled the Doctor.
“Officer Tennant was Albert’s grandfather,” interjected the Red Dragon Ranger. “A major hero for him.”
“…I’m sorry,” said the Doctor.
“Why? You’re not the one responsible for New Earth’s current hellscape,” replied Albert.
“Look, we better take these two to Banza,” said the Green Dragon Ranger.
“Banza?” asked the Doctor. “…I swear I heard that name before.”
“Are those the latest enemy movements?” asked an old man.
“Yes, General Banza,” replied a feminine looking robot.
“All right. Keep me posted,” said Banza. “I’ll have a look. Oh, have you heard from the Rangers yet? They’re overdue for check-.” A buzzer sounded.
“Banza, this is Red Dragon Tanya,” came the voice of the Red Dragon Ranger. “Apologies for lateness, but patrol turned up two people, a human and a Mobian Hedgehog. Specifically, a doctor and Amy Rose.”
“What?! Are they with you now?!” asked Banza.
“Yes, Sir,” replied Tanya.
“Bring them in!” Banza ended the call.
“How on earth did Amy get here?” remarked the robot.
“Maiden, come with me,” ordered Banza. “We need answers.”
“Yes, General,” replied the robot.
The Power Rangers brought the Doctor and Amy into the command center. The Doctor recognized it as New New York’s Senate Building. “Are there any survivors in the Undercity and the Motorway?”
“There’s survivors from all the districts,” replied Tanya. “They’ve congregated here in the old Senate Building. We’re using as a command center right now.” She and the Rangers were waved through after talking with the guards. They then arrived in a makeshift hangar. “All right, power down,” Tanya ordered the Rangers. They pressed a button on their wrist devices and pulled out keys shaped like dragons. Tanya was of African descent, Jonny’s grandson was as Irish as Jonny was, the Yellow Ranger was a blonde, the Green Ranger was a brunette man, and the Pink Ranger had her hair dyed pink. “All right, time to for introductions,” said Tanya. “I’m Tanya, the boy in blue is Albert, the blonde is Ashley, Green Guy’s Doctor Davis, and Pinky’s called Poppy. Now, where’s Maiden?”
“Maiden,” replied Banza as he arrived, “is with me. So, survivors made you late, Tanya?”
“Well, later than usual, yes,” replied Tanya.
“Oh, you’ve got to be kidding!” complained the Doctor when she saw Banza.
“Doctor?” asked Amy.
“Doctor?” repeated Banza. He then realized something and groaned. “Oh, no wonder Amy’s here! You blundered into this specific point in space-time, didn’t you, Doctor?!”
“Amy Rose, this is General Banza. He’s a Time Lord,” explained the Doctor.
“Like you?” asked Amy.
“No, NOT like me!” hissed the Doctor. “He’s a member of the now-defunct Celestial Intervention Agency! Self-serving and avaricious!”
“Another Time Lord?” asked Tanya.
“So Banza’s NOT the last?” asked Poppy.
“You know what happened?” quizzed the Doctor.
“We all do,” replied Davis. “But he said he was the last.”
“Apparently I was wrong,” said Banza. “But if you’re here, Doctor-,”
“Don’t get your hopes up,” replied the Doctor. “Rassilon’s still working on trying to get our people and planet back.”
“So he can turn us into the Daleks’ replacement?!” snarled Banza.
“Not this time,” assured the Doctor. “Why don’t we have a chat? Telepathically? It’s quite a lot.”
“…Very well. Contact.”
“Contact.” The two Time Lords had their telepathic conference.
“…It involves an adventure with the founder of Time Lord Society and her becoming a saner, more noble woman in the process,” Amy explained to the Rangers. The two Time Lords opened their eyes.
“So Gallifrey is being rebuilt by her alone, Doctor?” asked Banza.
“I told her to call me for help if needed,” replied the Doctor. “It’s a good thing she got the transduction barriers set up first.”
“No kidding. I’d do the same if I knew there were Dalek Temporal Spies. …Well, let’s not worry about Gallifrey’s predicament, perhaps we should bring you into the current picture.”
“Yes, I thought I saw a brief image of a monster,” remarked the Doctor.
“We’ve taken to calling them Stookies,” explained Banza. “They’re sent out by a resurrected Rita Repulsa, but their creator is a Celestial obsessed with play.”
“Obsessed with…no!” Horror crossed the Doctor’s face.
“Yes, Doctor. She’s acting like Pinocchio’s Blue Fairy, but it’s really-.”
“The Celestial Toymaker!” hissed the Doctor. All the while, she heard the arpeggio-style laugh of Stooky Bill.
