Planet of the Krynoids: Part 4

Everyone entered the main lab to see Tevik lying dead and a Krynoid in its transitionary period standing over him! This Krynoid was a healthy green! “Demna?!” yelped Tysar. The Krynoid turned to see the entire group. The Paradigm Drone Dalek entered the room and spotted the creature.

“EXTERMINATE!” it shouted and fired! The Krynoid was knocked back, then ran out of the hole it made in the wall.

“Oh, looky!” grunted the Doctor. “Another target Daleks can’t kill, a healthy Krynoid!”

“We have to get Demna-!” urged Tavis.

“Demna’s gone,” replied the Doctor. “The Krynoid’s consumed EVERYTHING about him. His flesh, his mind, his very SOUL!”

“Doctor, you said that Krynoids can control plants,” said Sailor Pluto.

“Alert! Alert! Vegetation ensnaring lab!” warned the Dalek as vines covered the hole the Krynoid made.

“…Your sense of timing is appalling, Setsuna!” hissed the Doctor.

“My crew!” gasped Tavis. “I have to contact my crew!” He pulled out his communicator. “Attention! Attention! This is Captain Tavis!”

Bettan, receiving you, Sir!” replied another voice.

“The situation’s bad!” reported Tavis. “Prepare for takeoff!”

“What about you?!”

“Never mind me!” urged Tavis. “Dr. Vrelan had created a Krynoid and has tested on Daleks! One Dalek survivor already shot him, the rest of the science team were fed to the Krynoid! Vrelan was a Reclamationist! Get out of there, NOW! The jungle will literally turn against you! Get back to New Davius! We’ll deal with the Krynoid here!”

“…Understood, Sir. Good luck.” The call ended.

“Doctor, the TARDIS!” warned Tysar.

“I’ll get you to the TARDIS when this is over, Doctor,” promised Sailor Pluto.

“You see? We have a route back,” the Doctor assured Tysar. “For now, we need to deal with the current crisis. …You, Red Dalek Ranger!”

“That is not my name!” barked the Dalek.

“We need to cut a way through to the Krynoid so we can deal with it. Can your weapon destroy plant matter?”

“Yes! My weapon can do the job, but my manipulator arm can also be replaced with a cutting torch!”

“Ooh! Two means of plant destruction! Good, good, good!” She plucked a communicator out of the lab’s storage unit. “Now, one, two, three, four, five. The Dalek and I are going alone, ask me why.”

“Why?!” yelped the Quantum Ranger.

“Because I’m dangerous when I don’t know what I’m doing. Right then! Ranger!” The Dalek twitched at being named. The panel on the back of its travel skirt then opened as its manipulator arm moved along a rail on its midsection, then tucked itself into the space the panel was concealing. A new arm then replaced it as the panel slid back into its usual place, then the new arm traveled along the rail and fitted itself into the manipulator arm socket. “Excellent! Let’s go!”

“Doctor-!” protested Tysar.

“Stay with the others, Tysar!” called the Doctor as she and the Dalek headed off.

“…Hey, if it gets too hairy,” said the Quantum Ranger, “I can get help.” He pulled out his Morpher. “This thing allows me to summon the Q-Rex Zord.”

“And I can augment its attacks with my own,” offered Sailor Pluto.

“…We wait until the Dalek does something stupid,” decided Tysar.

The Doctor and the Dalek cut their way through the jungle and entered a clearing. “Krynoid in vicinity!” warned the Dalek.

“Hold off on your weapons for a second,” said the Doctor. “I want to negotiate.”

“Negotiations with you animals,” replied a voice, “will not be possible, Doctor.” The Doctor and the Dalek whirled around to see the fully matured Krynoid and…

“GOOD NIGHT!” yelped the Doctor. “You’re as big as St. Paul’s Cathedral already!”

“Skaro’s sun has provided us the opportunity to grow to this size,” replied the Krynoid.

“Listen, if Demna’s in there, I need to speak with him!” urged the Doctor.

“The Thal host is gone. We shall go to New Davius.”

“You’re too big for the Bettan!”

“But our pods will survive. They need to adapt to space and the properties of New Davius. Once the Thals discover the pods, they shall germinate and we shall finish what the Daleks could not. Soon, Dalek and Thal alike will cease to exist. Skaro and New Davius belong to us.”

“I think I’ve heard enough!” declared the Doctor. “Dalek!”

“EXTERMINATE! EXTERMINATE!” The Dalek fell onto basic Dalek instinct, but the gunstick and torch arm proved useless. The Krynoid grabbed the Dalek and crushed it like a tin can.

“…Well, that’s a distress signal sent out to the wrong crowd,” muttered the Doctor.

“The Daleks cannot stop us,” replied the Krynoid. “Skaro will be ours. We shall consume all animal life-.” Just then, something big and metal struck the Krynoid from behind. The Krynoid turned to see a metal T-rex robot staring it down.

“…Isn’t that the-?” The Doctor realized what was going on. “…Eric!” she grumbled.

“Doctor, before you get mad,” said Tysar as she and her group arrived, “Eric summoning his Q-Rex Zord was the best option we had for distracting the Krynoid!”

“And its stasis field attack can immobilize the Krynoid long enough to be destroyed!” urged Sailor Pluto.

“Speaking of which,” said the Quantum Ranger. He held his Morpher to where his mouth would be. “Q-Rex, MEGAZORD MODE!” The Q-Rex Zord then assumed a humanoid form with a missile launcher replacing the right forearm. “Now, MAX BLIZZARD!” The Q-Rex Megazord fired streams of stasis energy from its shoulder at the Krynoid. The Krynoid froze in time, then Sailor Pluto summoned her Garnet Rod, complete with the Garnet Orb on top, and twirled it to create a whirlwind.

“Dead Scream!” she announced as the wind entered the Garnet Orb, creating a glowing purple ball of energy. She spun once, holding the Garnet Rod before her, and then fired the light purple energy at the temporally frozen Krynoid, destroying it in an explosion.

“…Q-Rex, return,” the Quantum Ranger said into his Morpher. The Q-rex left the scene.

“Captain Tavis, this is the Bettan,” came a voice over Tavis’ comms.

“Go ahead,” ordered Tavis.

“We’re ready to pick you all up, but it’s going to have to be a quick one! That Dalek sent out a distress signal to the Dalek Fleet currently 500 parsecs from the Skaro System.”

“Come on!” called Tavis. Everyone rushed back to the Bettan and it took off, leaving Skaro’s atmosphere and entering hyperspace quickly. The new helmsman checked the readings.

“…We’re not being pursued,” he reported. “The Daleks are too busy with landing on the now…well, for them, safer Skaro.”

“Yeah, safe isn’t exactly a word I’d use for Skaro,” remarked the Doctor. “Now, with us being in a much safer position, we need to get Sailor Pluto and Eric back.”

“I’ll deal with that part, Doctor,” said Sailor Pluto. “Time is also my thing, not just the Time Lords. By the way, congratulations on Gallifrey’s second restoration.”

“Thank you!” replied the Doctor.

“Come along, Eric!” declared Sailor Pluto. “I know you’re a Time Force ranger, but this is a little too far into your future.”

“Right,” replied the Quantum Ranger. He then held up his Morpher. “Power Down!” he said. His suit then vanished and he returned to normal. “Later!” he called. Sailor Pluto then used her Garnet Rod to make herself and Eric vanish.

“Well, with all that…goodbye,” said the Doctor as she headed back to the TARDIS.

The Doctor arrived in Engineering and found the TARDIS where she parked it. “There we are, old girl,” she said to her ship. She then heard footsteps. She looked to see Tavis and Tysar. “…You know me,” the Doctor said. “No point in long goodbyes.”

“But our job isn’t done yet,” said Tysar.

“…Tysar, I brought you back to your people,” reminded the Doctor.

“She’s right,” remarked Tavis. “You don’t need to travel with her anymore.”

“Too many people are being taken out of their proper times,” insisted Tysar. “I NEED to help them! And so does the Doctor!”

“You don’t need to travel with her!” replied Tavis.

“I have a job to do! And now, so do you!”

“Tysar, you’re choosing to go with a person where death just follows her and you’re very likely going to be a casualty!” Tysar goggled at Tavis.

“…I beg your pardon?” asked the Doctor.

“A lot of good people died along with the wicked ones,” said Tavis, looking directly at the Doctor, “and that’s more death than I signed up for.”

“Tavis, do you really think I wanted today to unfold the way it did?”

“No, Doctor, but I don’t see how you can go on when I can barely stomach it. And Tysar, how can YOU stomach it?!”

“I’m in the same boat as the Doctor here!” argued Tysar. “I may not have liked Demna, but I wouldn’t wish his fate on anyone and I doubt-!”

“Tysar, please,” interrupted the Doctor. She looked at Tavis. “…You’d rather not come with us?”

“My people say that a hero can burn someone like fire if you get too close and, Doctor, I got too close to every Thal’s hero today! …Tysar, please, don’t get too close to the Doctor.”

“…That’s not an option!” hissed Tysar. “Not when the universe needs my help while I’m capable of doing something to help it!” She then rushed to the TARDIS doors.

“Tysar! No! NOT LIKE THIS!” argued Tavis despairingly.

“Doctor, come on! We have work to do!” called Tysar. She then shut the door, leaving the Doctor to consider what was said. …She then sighed and walked to the doors.

“Doctor, you can’t-!” protested Tavis.

“I’m sorry, but she’s made her choice, Tavis,” said the Doctor. “…But she’ll be back on New Davius when this is over, I promise.”

“…How can you promise something like that when it’s HER choice?” asked Tavis, the first Thal to ever look at the Doctor with bitterness. He stormed back to the bridge. The Doctor sighed, then entered the TARDIS. It dematerialized in its usual manner with an engineer looking at where it was, having heard the whole argument.

“…Good luck, Doctor, Tysar,” said the engineer as he resumed his work.

Planet of the Krynoids: Part 3

“OPEN UP IN THERE!” shouted Demna as he banged on the lab’s door. “I KNOW A PREFABRICATED LAB WHEN I SEE ONE!”

“He’s not listening,” muttered Sailor Pluto.

“Maybe I can get us in,” said Eric as he pulled out a red handheld device. “QUANTUM POWER!” he called. A red suit and full-face helmet then appeared over him as he assumed his identity as the Quantum Ranger.

“Eric, your Ranger form is overkill!” protested the Doctor. “No, this requires finesse.” She pulled out her sonic screwdriver.

“Well, good thing the door’s not wood,” chuckled Sailor Pluto. The Doctor switched the screwdriver on and aimed it at the door…but nothing happened.

“What?” muttered the Doctor. She buzzed the door again, but still nothing. She checked the readings. “…Drat! He’s deadlocked the door! All right, Eric, go ahead.”

“Quantum Defender it is!” said the Quantum Ranger. He pulled out a red and silver t-rex themed gun and fired at the door lock. The lock exploded and the door opened. The Quantum Ranger mimed blowing on the barrel.

“…You DO realize that’s a laser, right?” asked Tevik.

“Oh, bite me!” replied the Quantum Ranger. “It’s cool!” The group then entered the lab.

“It’s dark in here,” muttered the Doctor. “I really must start carrying a torch!”

“Found the lights,” replied Demna.

“Switch them on,” ordered Tavis. The lights switched on and everyone could see the tubes with what looked like mounds of over-cooked spinach in them…barring one.

“Now that IS peculiar,” muttered the Doctor. She then spotted a recording device. “I wonder.” She then played back what Vrelan had recorded earlier. “…Smaller subjects?” muttered the Doctor. “What-?”

“Doctor!” called Tysar, slightly panicked.

“What is-?” The Doctor gasped when she saw the final tube. Inside it wasn’t a vegetable mound…but a Dalek creature!

“Eugh!” gagged the Quantum Ranger. “What IS that?!”

“That’s what a Dalek really looks like inside its casing,” replied the Doctor.

“THAT’S a Dalek?!” protested the Quantum Ranger. “The most evil life-form in existence?!”

“Then the mounds are-?!” gulped Tysar.

“They USED to be Daleks like our friend here,” replied the Doctor. “But somehow, they came into contact with Krynoid DNA. Not exactly ideal for a Krynoid host.”

“Why would Vrelan want to do that?!” shuddered Tavis. “The Daleks are evil, but we can’t inflict suffering on them! Otherwise we’d be no better than the Daleks!”

“The same kind of thing I said to myself when I found myself at the Daleks’ Genesis,” said the Doctor, recalling the incubation room and the wires she held in her fourth incarnation’s hand and Sarah Jane and Harry trying to urge her, rather HIM, to complete his mission for the Time Lords.

“But why make green bombs, Doctor?” asked Sailor Pluto.

“Tavis, Tysar, are there any on New Davius that would see the Thals return to Skaro?” asked the Doctor.

“The Reclamationists,” replied Tysar. “They think we can somehow push the Daleks off Skaro and retake it, making it a planet for purely Thals to live on. Basically, we should do to the Daleks what they did to us, at least that’s what a Reclamationist would say.”

“Fan out and search,” ordered Tavis. “But be careful. His logs said that the control variable’s still alive.”

“Tysar, Sailor Pluto, Eric, you stick close to me,” directed the Doctor. As everyone left, the Dalek creature looked intently at their retreating forms. Then it focused on the glass imprisoning it and prepared to hurl itself against the glass!

Demna had his side arm in his hand, looking fierce. “No Reclamationist’s gonna make ME move here!” he growled. “I’ll-!”

“Excuse me, but what are you doing here?” asked Vrelan’s voice as he stepped out of the shadows.

“Dr. Vrelan, you’d better not be a Reclamationist!” warned Demna. “If I find out that this whole thing is supposed to ‘reclaim Skaro for the Thal Race’, I’ll-!” Vrelan kicked the gun out of Demna’s hand then stuck a syringe into his neck! Demna collapsed to the ground with Vrelan making it so the impact didn’t make so much noise.

“I’m sorry, Commander,” said Vrelan, “but I can’t let you stop me, not when we CAN reclaim Skaro and drive the Daleks away. …It seems the experiment must take a different course.”

Tysar was bouncing her knee up and down, looking around nervously. “Doctor, are we really safe?” asked Sailor Pluto, verbalizing Tysar’s question.

“Relatively, yes,” said the Doctor. “But this IS Skaro we’re talking about and-.” She was interrupted by a scream.

“That was Demna!” yelped Tysar.

“Come on!” called the Doctor. By now, everyone rushed to Demna’s position. He was convulsing bad. The Doctor knelt down and saw green hives on his hand!

“He’s been in contact with a Krynoid pod!” she warned. “Everyone, keep back!”

“Doctor, are we sure of that?” asked Tysar.

“It’s the only logical explanation!” replied the Doctor.

“Then…why is there a puncture mark on his neck?”

“What?!” The Doctor caught sight of the puncture mark! “…This isn’t because of a pod! The Krynoid DNA’s been administered via a syringe!”

“…Vrelan!” hissed Tavis. “That must be the deployment system he talked about in his logs!”

“We need to get him to sick bay!” urged Tevik.

“Agreed! Come on, Demna!” The Doctor and Tavis helped the infected Demna up.

Demna was tied down as the hives were turning into vines. “I’m going to try and save him, but I don’t have much hope,” said the Doctor.

“The sedatives won’t wear off for a while yet,” reported Tevik. “We need to find Vrelan and make him pay!”

“Doctor, we’ll stand guard here,” offered Tavis. “You just keep my sister and our friends safe as you look for him, all right?”

“Got it,” replied the Doctor. The group then left.

“Sir, do you think there’s any hope for Demna?” asked Tevik.

“I don’t know, Lieutenant,” sighed Tavis. “All we can do is hope the Doctor can prevent his death.”

The group arrived at a locked part of the lab. “Let’s see what’s behind door number one, shall we?” asked the Doctor. She buzzed the door and it opened with ease. They entered the room and took stock.

“Look at all this!” said the Quantum Ranger. “What’s it all for?!” The Doctor examined the notes.

“Militarized terraforming!” she growled. “That’s what this is all about! It’s not just to reclaim Skaro, it’s to weaponize the telepathic control Krynoids have over other plants!” The Doctor then heard the familiar rattling noise Krynoids make! She turned to see a Krynoid in its humanoid shape within arm’s reach of the Quantum Ranger and Sailor Pluto! “Eric! Setsuna! Get back!” The two turned around and jumped back.

“Is that a Krynoid?!” yelped Tysar. The Doctor noticed how brown it was.

“…Yes, but it’s malnourished,” she said.

“Is that…dried blood on its tendrils?” asked Sailor Pluto.

“…Yes. In fact, it’s dried Slyther blood, along with dried THAL blood!”

“Thal?! You mean Vrelan’s fed his team to this thing?!”

“Yes, but it looks like he’s really stretched out the time between meals, watering, and time in the sun for this poor thing.”

“A necessary sacrifice I was willing to make,” came Vrelan’s voice. Everyone turned to see Vrelan with a modified Dalek gun in his hand!

“Vrelan, this is obscene!” snarled the Doctor. “What you’re doing is wrong! You’ve killed your entire team and-!”

“My ENTIRE team, Doctor?” asked Vrelan. “I think you’ll find Varsa is very much alive.” He nodded to the sickly Krynoid. “Though she won’t be for long.”

“Varsa?!” yelped Tysar. “That’s my childhood friend!”

“Demna should serve to be a better candidate for what I have planned,” said Vrelan.

“What, weaponized terraforming?” asked the Doctor. “Careful, that’s a Dalek method.”

“No! It’s different!” insisted Vrelan.

“I see no difference! You tap into the Krynoid’s telepathic field and then what? Command it to kill the Daleks, bring any survivors to you so you can convert them into your green bombs and detonate them to make new jungles, is that it?!”

“The Daleks will finally create something worthwhile through their deaths! And I have the means to control the Krynoids! They’ll be cultivated into something better! All the worlds the Daleks brought under their control? We can restore them! The Daleks never cared about the natural world of each planet they control! Not even Skaro! Well, the Daleks will learn what happens when you anger Mother Nature and-!”

“This isn’t part of the natural world!” argued the Doctor. “Bending plants to someone’s will, especially a Krynoid, will get someone killed!” Then…they heard a crash, like glass shattering. “…Oh no!”

“…Demna?” asked Tysar.

“No! I haven’t fitted the control collar on him yet!” yelped Vrelan. The Doctor then spotted what she initially thought was a red boiler…but upon closer inspection, she saw a plunger, an elongated whisk, black hemispheres, a pair of dome lamps, and an eyestalk.

“…Those Daleks you used,” she said, “were they Paradigm ones?”

“Mere drones, why?” asked Vrelan. Just then, two people outside screamed!

“Tavis?!” yelped Tysar. Tavis stumbled in, trying to get something off of him! The Doctor realized that it was the sole uninfected Dalek!

“GET THAT THING OFF HIM!” she called. Everyone, sans Vrelan, rushed to get the Dalek off Tavis, then the Dalek leapt off and scurried towards the Paradigm Drone casing. It opened the top, then slithered into the casing and closed it! The eyestalk then switched on! It had a yellow light with a blue pupil shaped after a goat’s. The casing’s limbs and eyestalk then twitched and rose upwards until they were level with everything. The dome swiveled so the eyestalk could take everything in. It spotted the sickly Krynoid, then aimed its gunstick!

“EXTERMINATE!” it shouted. It then fired, killing the sickly Krynoid.

“NO! YOU FOOL!” shouted Vrelan. “YOU’RE RUINING THE-!” The Dalek fired its gunstick on Vrelan, exterminating him and taking its revenge. It then looked directly at the Doctor.

“YOU ARE THE DOCTOR!” it screamed. “YOU ARE THE ENEMY OF THE DALEKS! YOU WILL BE-!” Another scream then cut it off, then a crash!

The repairs lasted a while. During that time, the ship was still hanging in space just above the planet. Finally, the Doctor grumbled and pulled herself out of the console she was working on. “…Well?” asked Tavis.

“…There’s nothing wrong with your sensors and Tevik’s math is correct,” sighed the Doctor.

“What on New Davius is THAT supposed to mean?!” protested Demna. “That planet looks nothing like Skaro! …Anything on long-range yet?”

“No saucers,” replied Tevik, “but I’d rather not run the risk.”

“And what I said means exactly what it means,” said the Doctor. “Your equipment is working perfectly and there’s no operator error. That IS Skaro we’re orbiting.”

“But that’s-!” argued Tysar.

“Look,” interrupted the Doctor, “us repeating the fact that the planet doesn’t look like how we remember seeing Skaro from space won’t change the fact that everything is working perfectly and Tevik’s the best damned helmsman of New Davius. The only way we can settle this mystery is to go down to the planet’s surface, risking the potential for a trap to be sprung.”

“That’s always fun,” sighed Tysar.

“The radiation may be less than normal Skaro readings,” said Tavis, “but I’m not running that risk. Demna, our stock of anti-radiation drugs?”

“We have enough for the Doctor and our friends,” replied Demna.

“Good. Tysar, you’ll need to arm yourself-.”

“Hold on! I didn’t need a weapon during my time in Gotham-!”

“Tysar, you ARE on my ship and I WON’T have my sister be exterminated so soon after reuniting with her. Arm yourself. That is an order.”

“Tysar, I loathe guns like you do,” said the Doctor, “but the Daleks will kill or enslave anyone that is unarmed. Not everyone can talk their way out of extermination like we do. Besides, those ARE stun weapons, enough for a quick getaway back to the ship or the TARDIS. Should the Daleks’ potential trap result in my death, take your people into the TARDIS and it will take you all back to New Davius. So, please, for my peace of mind, take it.”

“…Fine, Doctor,” grumbled Tysar.

“That goes for you two,” Tavis said to Eric and Setsuna.

“…Much appreciated,” said Setsuna, “but I am already armed.” She raised her hand. “Ordinarily, I’d consider everyone as civilians and wouldn’t do this in a public setting, but we’re pressed for time. Pluto Planet Power, MAKE UP!” A bright light surrounded Setsuna as her civilian clothes changed into her outfit as Sailor Pluto! Eric blinked.

“…You girls are real?!” he asked. “I thought you were just some superhero girl group from Japan!”

“We’re as real as you Power Rangers, Eric,” replied Sailor Pluto.

“…Sailor Scouts, I HAVE heard of,” remarked Demna, “but what are Power Rangers?”

“We’ll explain later,” replied the Doctor.

The Bettan landed near the jungle. Everyone inside took their first dose of anti-radiation drugs and stepped out. …It felt like the Amazon Rainforest to the Doctor! Hot and humid with massive trees and plants! “Even the jungles I visited when I blundered onto Skaro,” muttered the Doctor, “weren’t Earth-like!”

“This should be a petrified jungle,” remarked Tysar.

“Readings indicate,” said Tevik, “that we’ll take our next anti-radiation treatment in six earth hours.”

“Excellent,” said Tavis. “Now, stay close and be careful. Slythers could enjoy a jungle like this.”

“Slyther?” asked Eric.

“A carnivorous beast, large and inky black,” replied the Doctor, “with fearsome claws on its hands. It’s a nocturnal predator, but it HAS been known to eat during the day.”

“And it’s got thick skin in the most literal sense,” said Tysar.

“EXCUSE ME! ALL OF YOU!” shouted a voice.

“Well, that’s not a Dalek,” remarked the Doctor. A Thal man then approached the group.

“Dr. Vrelan!” sighed Tavis in relief. “Thank our ancestors, we found you!”

“Yes, yes, you did! Now who are you?!” demanded the new Thal, Vrelan.

“We’re the rescue party from New Davius,” replied Demna. “We were sent to retrieve you and your team as Skaro is too dangerous for-.”

“Then tell High Command that your mission is a failure! I’m too busy!” snapped Vrelan.

“…I don’t think you understand,” said Tavis. “We’re taking you home, away from-.”

“No, no, no, NO! My work here on Skaro is too important!” insisted Vrelan.

“Sir, this isn’t up for debate!” snapped Tavis. “We’ve called this the Forbidden Planet for a reason and-!”

“I don’t care! GO AWAY!”

“Dr. Vrelan,” interjected the Doctor, “what is so important that you would risk being shot at by Daleks right on their native world?”

“That’s not your concern, human!”

“Time Lord,” corrected the other Thals.

“…Pardon?”

“Yep, that’s the Doctor,” said Tysar. “You know, the one who saved our ancestors’ butts?”

“Her TARDIS is on my ship,” said Tavis. “The same ship you WILL be boarding.”

“…I see,” remarked Vrelan. He then gave his attention to the Doctor. “Doctor, you’ll have to forgive me for dragging you into such a trifle, but my work is extremely important. Even-.” That’s when a scream echoed throughout the jungle.

“Tevik!” yelped Tavis. He and the group followed the scream. “Tevik, are you-?!”

“I-I’m fine, physically!” replied Tevik as he pointed to the body of a big, black, hulking thing with claws on its hands and eyes protruding on stalks like snails. “But seeing a shredded Slyther corpse will haunt my nightmares!” The Doctor stepped forward to investigate. Part of the flesh was missing and there were severe bite marks, meaning that the missing flesh was probably in the biter’s gullet and being digested.

“Whatever did this must have been strong,” remarked Tysar. “Those things can’t even be pierced by Varga plant spikes.”

“Or be stung by the flytrap type of Varga,” said the Doctor as she took readings from the sonic screwdriver. She checked the readings and goggled when she saw traces of chloroplasts and schizophytes around the bite marks! “But it WAS a plant that killed this Slyther!”

“What plant could do that?” asked Sailor Pluto.

“None of the native Skaro flora could-,” said Tysar.

“Exactly, none of the NATIVE Skaro flora,” interrupted the Doctor. “This wasn’t done by a native plant. I think I know why the Daleks haven’t attacked us, they had to abandon the planet! That would partially explain the lower radiation and the appearance of a proper jungle! I think Skaro’s home to a Krynoid!”

“Preposterous!” scoffed Vrelan.

“A Krynoid, Doctor?” asked Tysar. “What’s that?”

“I can’t say as I’ve heard of a Krynoid,” remarked Tavis.

“Well, on most planets, animals eat the vegetation, yes?” asked the Doctor. Everyone nodded. “On planets where the Krynoid gets established, the tables are turned.”

“What, all plants turn carnivorous?” asked Demna.

“Yes,” replied the Doctor. “The Krynoids are vegetable life that feed on animal life. Dr. Vrelan, if the Daleks are wisely leaving this world, you should too!”

“I can’t! My work is too important!” insisted Vrelan. “Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to the lab before I actually start believing spaceport stories about plant men!” He stormed off!

“Dr. Vrelan, come back here! My ship is THAT way!” called Tavis.

“Now that IS peculiar,” mused the Doctor.

“What is?” asked Eric.

“Not once did I mention plant men,” explained the Doctor, “but that IS one of the stages of the Krynoid’s growth.”

“Doctor, I think you’d better fill us in on how these Krynoids grow,” said Demna.

“They start off as seed pods, half as big as your head,” began the Doctor. “Once the seeds are given enough warmth and nutrients, they split open and a shoot grabs a nearby animal, then fuses with it, pumping it full of Krynoid-based schizophytes, plant bacteria. The schizophytes then consume the animal tissue while the host is alive, then the Krynoid cells take the consumed animal cells’ place. Eventually, the Krynoid will assume a vaguely humanoid shape and look for food and warmth. After a while, the Krynoid will just be a mound of vegetable matter with tendrils, ready to eat and spread more of its seed pods, as well as telepathically control any plant life to achieve its aims of killing all animal life.”

“And we’re in a minefield under Krynoid control!” gulped Tysar.

“Not yet,” said the Doctor, “or the plants would have attacked us already. I think something’s keeping our Krynoid at bay. …And I believe Dr. Vrelan will provide the answers.”

Back in the lab set up by Dr. Vrelan, said scientist had pulled out a recording device set next to two opened seed pods! He activated the device and spoke into it. “The pods have germinated well,” he said. “The first subject has responded to the treatment well. She has grown into a fine specimen; however, the lack of regular amounts of food, water, and sunlight has left her weak. This has allowed for some control. I am preparing the next test. In the first test, I allowed the shoot from the pod to fuse with the test subject in accordance with the natural life cycle of a Krynoid. The next few tests were smaller scale ones to see if Krynoid DNA would change them and also served to see if the deployment system I developed would work. While the test subjects after the control didn’t survive, the control could use the dead subjects as a sort of green bomb, hence the sudden appearance of the jungle and decreased radiation. Now I shall see if a direct injection into something bigger shall produce a faster result for something like the control.” He ended his log and pulled up the security feed to show the Doctor and her friends approaching the lab. “Once again, Doctor, you shall help us Thals in our greatest peril.”

Planet of the Krynoids: Part 1

“Adjusting heading,” reported a blonde man on the bridge of a starship.

“Why are we going back there?” muttered another blonde man. “We evacuated that planet for a reason.”

“Okay, at this point, I’m just repeating myself,” groaned the captain of the ship of blondes. “A science team was last reported there and we have to conduct a retrieval mission.”

“They’re probably dead already!” protested the second man.

“Well, would YOU wanna let them stay there?!” argued the helmsman.

“All right, all right!” called the Captain. “Let’s not start an argument. High Command already assigned us this mission and we’re too close to our target planet to turn back now.

“Approaching the coordinates,” said the helmsman. His brow then furrowed. “…Hang on…why aren’t their orbital defenses activating?”

“Tevik’s right,” said the second blonde. “They should be shooting at us by now.”

“…Scan for any ships and orbital defenses, Commander Demna,” the Captain ordered the second man. Demna ran his scans.

“…The sensors must be faulty!” he protested. “There’s nothing! No ships, no satellites, nothing!”

“Captain Tavis, sir, the readings I’m getting from the planet aren’t matching what we know of our target,” said Tevik.

“Put it up on screen,” ordered the Captain, Tavis. Tevik pulled up the view of the planet and everyone blinked in surprise. “…That can NOT be possible,” muttered Tavis. “Demna, I think you may be onto something about our sensors being faulty. Have Engineering-.” An alarm then cut out his order. “Another intruder alert?!” asked Tavis. Demna checked his instruments.

“Engineering’s reported an alien noise,” he said. “Security’s down there now and…hang on, that doesn’t make sense.”

“What?” asked Tavis. Demna turned in his chair.

“Security and Engineering are claiming that the TARDIS is aboard.”

“…I’m going down there,” decided Tavis. “Demna, you’re in command of the bridge.”

“Sir!” replied Demna as he and Tavis saluted each other. Tavis then left the bridge.

Security forces were aiming their stun guns at the blue box when Tavis arrived. “…Sure looks like that box the Doctor, Ian, Susan, and Barbara arrived in,” he remarked.

“Sir, can we really be sure it’s the TARDIS?” asked the lead Security Officer.

“That’s what we’ll find out,” replied Tavis. He knocked on the door. “Greetings,” he called aloud. “I am Captain Tavis of the starship Bettan. You are currently in the Engineering Section of my ship. If you could step out of the box and identify yourself-.” Tysar was the first to rush out.

“T-Tavis?!” she asked. Tavis’ eyes goggled.

“…Tysar?!” he asked.

“Gods, it IS you!” cheered Tysar as happy tears flowed from her eyes. She pulled Tavis into a hug as another Thal waved a machine over her. He looked at his readings and the genetic match confirmed that it was Tysar.

“Tysar, where have you been?!” asked Tavis. “You vanished three years ago and-!”

“I’ll tell you everything soon!” promised Tysar. “For now, how many of you here want to see our greatest hero’s current face?” The surrounding Thals nodded. “Thought so!” Tysar turned towards the TARDIS. “Doctor! Come on out! We’re among my people!” The Doctor stepped outside.

“So, this IS a Thal ship!” chuckled the Doctor.

“Doctor, it’s a great honor to meet you!” bid Tavis. “Sorry for the weapons pointing at you. I can assure you, they’re just stun weapons. …Speaking of which. All of you, stand down!” The security forces holstered their weapons. “You’ll have to pardon our jumpiness,” he said. “We’re on a dangerous mission.”

“The Bettan’s a science ship, last I checked,” remarked Tysar.

“Could someone fill me in on how Tysar and Tavis know each other?” asked the Doctor.

“Oh, he’s my baby brother,” replied Tysar. “We were together before I ended up in Gotham.”

“Ah!” The Doctor smiled. “Well, a really good thing I was tracking chronal surges, then! Tavis, was it? The reason for Tysar’s vanishing act was because an energy wave plucked her out of your time and put her somewhere else in time and space. Specifically, 21st century Earth.”

“Good heavens!” swore Tavis.

“I had to scavenge for food!” shuddered Tysar. “I am NEVER touching hot dogs again!”

“Sir, do you think that our stowaways are telling the truth?” asked a security officer. “That they were plucked out of their times by some energy wave like Tysar here?”

“Her return DOES give their story a little more credibility,” replied Tavis.

“You mean we’re not the only stowaways here?” asked the Doctor.

“No. In fact, come with me. I think you might be able to prove that they’re telling the truth.”

Tavis led the Doctor and Tysar to a room on the lower decks of the ship. He then keyed in a command and the door opened. Two people rose from the couch they were sitting on, one male and one female. “Hello again, Captain,” greeted the man. “Still don’t believe our story?”

“Oddly enough,” said Tavis, “I have two people that may confirm your story, Mr. Myers.” He stepped aside to reveal the Doctor and Tysar. The Doctor’s eyes lit up when she saw the woman, recognizing the tan skin and dark green hair.

“SETSUNA!” she greeted.

“Doctor!” yelped the woman, Setsuna Meiou, AKA Sailor Pluto! “I don’t believe it! It’s you again! …You’re wearing the wrong body.”

“No, I’m wearing the right body, but not necessarily in the right order,” said the Doctor. “So, odd question, but were you plucked out of your point in space and time by a chronal surge and plopped here on the Bettan, spooking the Thals here a bit?”

“That’s correct,” replied Setsuna. “And so was Mr. Myers here.” She gestured to the man.

“…Should I know you?” the Doctor asked the man.

“Eric Myers, Time Force,” greeted the man. The Doctor’s eyes widened again.

“The Quantum Ranger himself!” she said.

“You’ve heard of me?” asked Eric.

“You and your Time Force Ranger friends!” replied the Doctor. She turned back to Tavis. “They’re telling the truth! They’re not here to sabotage anything!”

“Excellent!” said Tavis. “Now…why are chronal surges popping up in the first place?”

“That would be because of the Grouping rearing its ugly head again,” explained the Doctor.

“The Grouping?” asked Setsuna.

“Then time and space are getting rearranged?” asked Eric. “That’s what I heard had happened last time the Grouping was going on.”

“Yes, but now there’s not as many races that can mitigate the damage,” answered the Doctor. “The Flux saw to that.”

“I was afraid of that,” sighed Setsuna.

“Now, we need to get you two back to your own times,” said the Doctor.

“I can handle that, Doctor,” assured Setsuna. “…But perhaps we can help the Bettan and her crew with the current problem?”

“So you DO know what the mission is,” grumbled Tavis.

“What mission is that?” asked Tysar.

Everyone was brought to the bridge. Demna and Tevik saw the new arrivals. “Sir?” asked Demna.

“Believe it or not, their story checks out,” replied Tavis. “The Doctor here proved that.”

“Hello!” greeted the Doctor.

“Hold on, that’s THE Doctor?!” asked Demna.

“No autographs, please,” replied the Doctor.

“Demna?!” protested Tysar.

“YOU!” snarled Demna.

“Tavis, why is HE on this mission?!” asked Tysar.

“He does good work, Tysar. You know this,” replied Tavis. “And this is my helmsman, Lieutenant Tevik.”

“A pleasure,” greeted Tevik.

“Doctor, I’m about to display a set of coordinates,” said Tavis. “Perhaps you can tell us if you recognize them?”

“It’s been a while since I read Thal Standard coordinates,” replied the Doctor, “but I think I can get by.” Tavis punched up the coordinates and the Doctor and Tysar’s faces fell to horror. “…No!” whispered the Doctor.

“No way would New Davius High Command send the Bettan there!” pleaded Tysar.

“Then you DO know the planet we’re supposed to be orbiting,” said Tavis.

“I’m afraid I don’t,” admitted Eric. “What’s wrong with the planet?”

“It’s our ancestral homeworld,” explained Tysar.

“…Skaro!” hissed the Doctor.

“Skaro?! Wait, isn’t that the homeworld of the-?!” Eric yelped.

“The Daleks, yes,” confirmed Setsuna. She then recalled something. “…Hang on, you said you’re supposed to be orbiting Skaro, Captain Tavis?”

“That’s correct,” replied Tavis. “But we haven’t been fired on and…well…” He pulled up the planet on the viewscreen. The Doctor blinked.

“…Skaro’s still a red, radioactive canker of a planet, yes?” she asked as she checked the readings.

“With Dalek ships still patrolling the skies and orbital defenses permanently set to kill any intruding vessel,” confirmed Tavis.

“So why haven’t we been shot at for one thing?” asked the Doctor. “Where are the ships and defense satellites? Why are the radiation levels only slightly higher than normal? And, most importantly, why is the planet on the screen yellow with just one green patch just south of the equator?! Are you sure you set the coordinates correctly?!”

“I’ve triple-checked my math, Doctor,” replied Tevik. “Maybe there’s something wrong with the sensors or the Daleks are trying something to disguise Skaro. Either way, we need to locate a science team on that planet and either retrieve them or…or their bodies, as is most likely the case, if that planet IS Skaro.”

“…I’ll give your sensors a repair service,” said the Doctor. “Meanwhile, I hope everyone is armed for a quick getaway.”

A Colorful Game: Part 4

The earthquake reached the command center, cluing the Doctor in on what was happening. “Oh dear,” she muttered. “It’s risen.”

“You mean Rita’s-?!” gulped Albert.

“Summoned the very first Dragonzord, yes,” confirmed the Doctor. “Maiden, we need to deploy the Zords.”

“I can’t!” replied Maiden. “I’m locked out of all systems!”

“What?!” The Doctor then recalled what she and Banza did. “Of course! Retina scan!”

“Oh, of course!” realized Maiden. “Miss Rose, I’ll need your help!” The android quickly pulled up several functions. “Now, when the light on the retina scanner flashes, look into it!”

“Right!” replied Amy. Maiden then keyed in a few commands. The light flashed and Amy looked into it. “Oof! Bright!” she yelped.

“Ranger System: Online!” cheered Maiden. “All weapons and gear available! Albert-!”

“Send out the Battlizer too!” directed Albert. “I have a feeling Tanya will need it!”

“Banza was repairing the Battilizer Deployment equipment before his death,” explained Maiden. “You’ll have to deliver it yourself.” She pulled out a gold device that could fit over a Morpher.

“Understood,” replied Albert. “In that case, IT’S MORPHING TIME!” Albert inserted his key into his Morpher, then posed as he became the Blue Dragon Ranger. He then pressed the call button on his Morpher. “Tanya, we’re back in action!” he reported.

“We’re all in our suits here, Albert!” replied Tanya on the other end. “We’re summoning our Zords!”

“I’m bringing the Battlizer! I’d say the situation calls for the full power of the Dragon Ultrazord!”

“Good thinking! Hurry!” Tanya ended the call, then Albert spoke into his Morpher again.

“Launch Blue Dragon Zord!” he said.

“All voice commands: confirmed!” reported Maiden. “Launching all Zords!”

Far off from New New York, a hangar opened from the ground. Once done, lights flashed on. Those lights were the eyes of the Dragon Zords! The Dragon Zords, mechanical dragon-themed mecha, flew out of the hangar, en route to the battlefield!

“Gotta go!” Albert said to the Doctor and her team.

“Have fun!” chuckled the Toymaker.

“…Must you?” muttered the Doctor.

The Zords and Albert arrived at the battlefield in short order. Albert handed Tanya the Battlizer. “It’s now or never, Tanya!” he said.

“Well, I always liked ‘Now’!” replied Tanya as she put the Battlizer on her Morpher. “Activate Battlizer!” She pressed the button on her Morpher and golden armor appeared over her usual red suit. “All right, everyone! Into your Zords! Activate Dragon Striker Ultrazord!”

“RIGHT!” replied all the Rangers. They all leapt into their respective Zords, then they started shifting into limbs, a torso, and weapons. The parts combined and formed a giant, multi-colored, humanoid robot. The Rangers all appeared in the cockpit and took the controls.

“Open a channel to the Dragonzord!” ordered Tanya.

“Got it!” replied Poppy. She keyed in a command and Rita appeared on screen.

“What do you Power Losers want?!” demanded Rita.

“We’re giving you one last chance to surrender, Repulsa,” warned Tanya. “If you don’t take it, we’ll destroy the Original Dragonzord AND the Master Morpher.”

“Fat chance! I’ll destroy you Rangers and take the Morphing Grid for myself! I’ll be the ONLY Power Ranger and finally set this universe on the path of evil where it NEEDS to go!”

“Your funeral.” Tanya closed the channel, then all the Rangers pulled on the control sticks they were using. The Ultrazord then swung its weapon at the Dragonzord. The Dragonzord countered with its tail, activating the drill on it to cause damage. Sparks flew off the Ultrazord as it stumbled from the attack. The Dragonzord then fired missiles from its fingers, causing the Ultrazord to stumble the instant it was hit. “All right, you disgrace to Green Rangers!” snarled Tanya. “You asked for it! Ultrazord: Final Attack!” The Rangers pressed the thumb buttons on their controls. The Ultrazord then twirled its weapon above its head, creating an energy ring, then swung the weapon and the energy ring restrained the Dragonzord. The Ultrazord then ran at the Dragonzord and slashed at it with its weapon. The Dragonzord sparked as Rita tried to regain control. No dice, the Dragonzord regained control of itself and ejected Rita. She tumbled to the ground and her transformation was canceled, showing her gasping in pain. At that moment, she spotted the Master Morpher.

“One of…Tommy’s…other forms!” she panted. “That’s it!” She then crawled forward. “The Black…Dino Thunder…Ranger…will work! When I’m…done with…the Rangers…they’ll be history!” That was when she spotted the hem of a familiar blue dress!

“Speaking of history,” purred the Toymaker as she picked up the Master Morpher, “guess who’s back?!”

“Toymaker?! I thought the Doctor took care of you!” gulped Rita. “I-It’s a relief to see you again, old friend!”

“Cut the malarkey, my old opponent!” snapped the Toymaker as the Master Morpher turned into a toy in her clutch. “We’re not friends! I entertained your thoughts of conquest since before we found this planet! Now it’s time to put the toys away!”

“Oh no! I’ve still got plans for the Stookies! They’re a lot better than the Putty Patrollers!”

“Well, I’m sad to say you have no choice in the matter! Speaking of Putty Patrollers, interested in seeing their creator again?!” The Toymaker snapped her fingers and a familiar circular container appeared. “Your old gang’s here! Minus Lord Zedd, of course!”

“Wait! No! YOU CAN’T!” begged Rita. “NOT THE SPACE DUMPSTER!”

“Why not? You’re a toy broken beyond even the skill of a restorationist on YouTube,” chuckled the Toymaker. “All toys that end up in such a state go straight to the trash!” The Toymaker laughed as she opened the lid to the space dumpster and Rita was sucked inside!

“Mistress Rita!” called a rough voice from inside.

“Goldar! Squat! Baboo! Finster! Scorpina! What are you nitwits doing here?! Who’s the kid?!” screeched Rita. The Toymaker closed the lid and sent the space dumpster out into space to travel forever.

“And that, as they say, is that,” chuckled the Toymaker. The Doctor, Amy, and the Rangers ran up to them.

“…I don’t recall that being part of the deal,” remarked the Doctor.

“I have altered the deal, Doctor,” replied the Toymaker. “Pray I don’t alter it any further. Now, that path to Grand Zeno? Who is that person who has such favor with him?”

“A Saiyan that answers to Kakarot and Son Goku,” answered the Doctor. “He was sent to a human colony just moments before the Saiyan Genocide.”

“Ah, I know which colony that is,” smirked the Toymaker. “Oh, Doctor, if you’re lying, I COULD just turn you into action figures of your and current incarnations. I have a few stop-motion adventures in my head.” The Toymaker then opened a door somewhere and a bell rang like an old shop door. She stepped through, then vanished.

“…Well, now what-?” asked Tanya as she looked around. Then…she saw it. “…Guys! LOOK!” she said as she demorphed. There, just above the outer limits of New New York…was a hole in the clouds that covered the skies. The hole got bigger and bigger until…everyone could see blue skies and the sun! Tanya canceled her transformation as she fell to her knees, tears welling up in her eyes.

“…We won,” sighed the Doctor happily. All across the city, everyone was leaving their shelters and looking up at the sky. There wasn’t a dry eye in the city. All that stress of worrying whether or not they’d see tomorrow…it was finally leaving them. As Albert looked up, he started singing.

On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross,

The emblem of suffering and shame.

And I love that old cross where the dearest and best,

For a world of lost sinners was slain.

So I’ll cherish the old rugged cross

‘Till my trophies at last I lay down!

I will cling to the old rugged cross

And exchange it some day for a crown!” The Doctor remembered the last time she heard that hymn. She listened keenly and could hear everyone else singing that hymn, just like when the Under-city was finally freed.

The Doctor and Amy returned to the TARDIS as the rebuilding began. “So, a new dawn for New Earth,” said Amy.

“A long awaited dawn,” replied the Doctor. “I just wish Banza could see it. …I had to inform his TARDIS what happened. It got the coordinates for Gallifrey and resolved to head to the TARDIS Graveyard beneath the Citadel. It will finally die so it can be scavenged for parts and scrapped respectfully.”

“Would your TARDIS do the same?” asked Amy. “I mean, if it turns out you DON’T have unlimited incarnations-.”

“The old girl and I already talked about it.” By now, the Doctor had unlocked the door and she and Amy went inside. “She plans to be my tomb if and when I permanently die. She’ll stay wherever I fall. But, enough about that! Let’s see what awaits us next! Any old friends you want to visit?” Amy thought a bit.

“…Doctor, have you been to an Earth populated by squids?” she asked.

“…Sounds rather wet,” mused the Doctor. “How about you put your hands on the telepathic circuits and tell the TARDIS about it?”

“You mean like you did with sending a message to Rassilon?” asked Amy.

“That’s right, only this time, you’re talking to the TARDIS itself.” The Doctor brought Amy to the appropriate panel. Amy then took off her gloves and placed her hands on the controls, thinking about what she told the Doctor.

A Colorful Game: Part 3

“BANZA!” called Tanya as she ran up to the group. “Doctor, wha-?!”

“He’s dead! I’m so sorry!” said the Doctor.

“You’re next, self-proclaimed Last of the Time Lords!” snarled the Toymaker.

“Hold it!” called Tanya. “Just resorting to murder? How is THAT fun?”

“The Doctor’s presence always spoils my fun!” replied the Toymaker.

“And you don’t intend to play any of her games?”

“No! The odds are always stacked against me!”

“So you know her as an opponent,” mused Tanya. “…What about me?”

“…What about you?” asked the Toymaker.

“Tanya, NO!” protested the Doctor.

“I challenge you to Liar’s Dice!” Tanya proclaimed to the Toymaker. A wicked grin crossed the face of the Embodiment of Play.

“Name your terms,” said the Toymaker. “I’ll see if I accept then.”

“If and when you win, this whole universe becomes your playroom instantly and you can do with the Doctor as you wish,” replied Tanya. “If and when I win, you leave us mortals and semi-immortals alone and find playmates more your level cosmically speaking.”

“…Sounds fair. Two out of three rounds?” suggested the Toymaker.

“Agreed.”

“Then I accept! Stookies!” The Toymaker tossed her riding unicorn to a Stookie. More Stookies then brought out a table, some chairs, ten six-sided dice, and two cups.

“Tanya, you’re making a very dangerous gamble!” argued the Doctor.

“This HAS to end today one way or another!” replied Tanya as she placed five dice into her cup. The Toymaker sat opposite Tanya and did the same. The two women then shook their cups, then slammed them upside down. They then peeked under their cups. “…You first,” offered Tanya. “I laid down the rules, it’s only fair.”

“Your funeral,” chuckled the Toymaker. “Two fours.”

“Three fours,” said Tayna.

“Four fours.”

“…Four fives.” The Toymaker smirked at Tanya’s call.

“Five fives.”

“Liar!” declared Tanya. The two then revealed their dice…and there were only two fives, all on the Toymaker’s side!

“…Now that WAS a good bluff!” praised the Toymaker. “Shall we break, then play round 2?”

“Perhaps you can answer a question,” remarked Tanya. “Why go after the Universal Morphing Grid?”

“To get to the Morphing Masters, the ultimate opponents,” replied the Toymaker. “They would make the games fun!”

“They won’t play your games, Toymaker,” said the Doctor. “They’re neutral.”

“They provided all Ranger teams their powers, Doctor,” chuckled the Toymaker. “Whether it be through the Nexus Prism or Power Eggs, they’re the source. …Though, I must admit, I’m curious, Tanya.”

“What’s that?” asked Tanya.

“You’re the Red Ranger. …How come you haven’t morphed recently? …Unless…aha! A lock-down! And given the retina-scan technology used, your own retina-print was disabled! Now…whose eyes are the master print?”

“…Beat me in this round and you’ll find out,” replied Tanya as she put her dice in the cup.

“Very well,” replied the Toymaker as she put her dice in her cup. The two shook their cups, then slammed them onto the table. The two then peeked under their respective cups.

“Your turn this time,” said the Toymaker.

“…Two threes,” called Tanya.

“Three threes,” replied the Toymaker.

“Four threes.”

“Five threes.”

“…Five sixes!” called Tanya.

“Liar!” cackled the Toymaker. They revealed their dice…and there was only one six on Tanya’s side. “A deal’s a deal,” chuckled the Toymaker. “Whose eyes are the master print?”

“…Amy Rose of Mobius,” sighed Tanya.

“Stookies, go collect her,” ordered the Toymaker. The Stookies bowed and took off.

“Rangers, go assist her and Albert!” Tanya ordered her team. The Rangers quickly took off.

“Not going to make it easy for them?” taunted the Toymaker.

“Even without their Ranger powers,” replied Tanya, “my team is more than a match for your Stookies! …Last round.”

“I hope you’re prepared to be a new addition to my Power Rangers collection!” cackled the Toymaker as she and Tanya put the dice in their cups and shook them. “Your call.” The two women then slammed their cups down and checked their dice.

“…Two twos,” called Tanya.

“Three twos,” replied the Toymaker.

“Four twos.”

“Five twos.”

“Six twos.” The Toymaker blinked in surprise.

“…Seven twos.”

“Eight twos!” The Toymaker decided to try something.

“…Nine twos.”

“LIAR!” called Tanya. The Toymaker revealed her cup…and only had one two. Tanya smirked, then revealed her FIVE twos!

“WHAT?!” shouted the Toymaker.

“What, did you use the wrong dice for yourself?” asked Tanya.

“No, she didn’t,” chuckled the Doctor. “She HAS to play fair, otherwise it’s no fun for anyone. …I have to admit, that was a risky gamble. But congratulations, Tanya, you’re the first human I know of that has bested the Toymaker!”

“…Like I said,” muttered the Toymaker, “a deal’s a deal. Rita, we’re leaving.”

“Oh no! Not until I claim MY prize!” cackled Rita.

“…Come again?” asked the Toymaker.

“You lost twice! I only lost once! I win!” replied Rita.

“…Toymaker, what did you say to Rita?” asked the Doctor.

“I said that if she won two games against me, she’d claim the Master Morpher,” explained the Toymaker.

“Those weren’t your EXACT words!” replied Rita. “Your exact words were if one witnesses the other lose two times, then they may claim their prize! Well, you lost twice!”

“What?! You can’t claim the Master Morpher on those grounds!” protested the Toymaker.

“I can and I will!” Rita held her hand out, then a golden buckle device appeared with a circular slot in the center. “Oh, I’ve waited a long time for this! I’d say it’s time! Specifically, It’s Morphing Time!” Rita put a gold coin into the buckle, then thrust it forward. “Dragonzord! Green Ranger Power!” The buckle opened slightly, then green light surrounded Rita. The light faded and Rita was now wearing a green Power Ranger suit!

“That suit is Tommy Oliver’s!” snarled Tanya. “Give me that Morpher!”

“Try and take it, kid!” cackled Rita. She then pulled out a dagger and attacked! Tanya and her Ranger team tried to stop her, but it was no good! “Oooooh, the power! I should have put this thing on YEARS ago!” cackled Rita.

“Hoo boy!” muttered the Doctor. “Tanya, hold her off as best you can! Toymaker, you’re with me!”

“Wha-?!” spluttered the Toymaker as the Doctor grabbed her hand and pulled her along. “UNHAND ME, TIMELESS CHILD!” demanded the Toymaker. The Doctor still has a habit of not listening to authority.

Amy, Albert, and Maiden were still keeping an eye on the battlefield. “This is absurd!” grumbled Albert. “I know I’m the tech support, but I need to be there for my friends!” Just then, the Doctor and the Toymaker burst into the room.

“INTRUDER ALERT!” warned Maiden.

“Belay that!” replied the Doctor. “She’s not the enemy here!”

“Doctor, you HAVE seen what she’s done to New Earth, yes?!” argued Albert.

“Well, she’s not doing it anymore,” answered the Doctor.

“Your red friend, Tanya,” explained the Toymaker, “she defeated me in a game of Liar’s Dice. According to her terms, I have to limit my playtime to opponents more my cosmic level!”

“It’s the truth,” confirmed the Doctor. “But we have another problem. Seems she also lost a game to Rita.”

“What?!” asked Amy. “What did Rita win?”

“The Master Morpher,” replied the Doctor. “She’s currently wearing the original Green Power Ranger suit and that’s very likely to come with the weapons and Zord usually associated with the original Green Ranger.”

“The Original Dragonzord?!” gulped Albert. “We need our own Zords!”

“Exactly, so I need your help restoring your suits, weapons, and Zords,” explained the Doctor.

“The Master Morpher gives Rita all the Ranger forms Tommy Oliver had,” said Maiden.

“Well, therein lies the devil in the details of my deal with the Toymaker,” answered the Doctor.

“What deal?” asked the Toymaker. “You made no deal with me.”

“Well, here are my terms. Once the Zords combine and defeat the original Dragonzord, I’d like you to turn the Master Morpher into a toy. Useful only to make lights and sounds when you use it.”

“…And what would I get in return for doing as you ask, Timeless Child?”

“The path to an opponent I know is your cosmic level. Are you familiar with Grand Zeno?” The Toymaker’s eyes went wide.

“The Omni-king himself?!” she asked. “You can take me to his palace?”

“I can’t, but I know someone who can,” replied the Doctor. “Turn the Master Morpher into a toy and I’ll tell you who to look for and where he is in time and space. He’ll be able to get you to Grand Zeno’s palace.”

“…I’ll hold you to that promise, Doctor,” warned the Toymaker.

“Very good, but…” the Doctor then checked the instruments, “there’s still the matter of actually BEATING Rita.”

Rita was still holding her own against the currently depowered Rangers, cackling all the while. “And I thought all this power would give me a headache! Turns out it CURED me of a walking rainbow of one!”

“We’re not dead, Rita!” retorted Tanya as she spat out a tooth.

“True,” conceded Rita, “so I’ll just need more power. …In fact, I need Dragonzord power!” She then put the hilt of her dagger to her helmet’s lips and pressed three buttons on the handle as if it were a flute. A melody played and the earth shook.

“Oh no!” gulped Tanya. A mecha styled like an 80’s t-rex but with draconic features then rose from the earth! The Dragonzord had risen!

A Colorful Game: Part 2

“Doctor, what’s this Celestial Toymaker?” asked Amy.

“Bad news, VERY bad news!” replied the Doctor. “He…SHE is a godlike being that embodies one of the very fundamental forces of the universe.”

“Chaos? Like the Black Guardian?” asked Amy.

“No, worse than ANY Guardian,” corrected the Doctor. “Therein lies the problem for most people. The universe isn’t binary, far from it. There IS order, there IS chaos, but there’s also play.”

“And the Celestial Toymaker’s origins are shrouded,” remarked Banza. “Even us Time Lords can’t make sense of it.”

“Either way, why would the Toymaker reduce New Earth to this hellscape?” mused the Doctor. “She seeks to turn entire universes into part of her playroom.”

“There were quite a few Power Rangers toys back then, Doctor. And their original Super Sentai.”

“Yes, but this makes for a rather ill playset,” remarked the Doctor. “…Unless this has something to do with the Universal Morphing Grid.”

“The what?” asked Amy.

“It’s a multi-dimensional energy source us Rangers access,” explained Tanya.

“By establishing a link to it,” said Poppy, “our cellular makeup is uploaded to the Grid, allowing us the knowledge and powers that come with it.”

“That’s where the Morphers come in,” continued Albert as he showed his off. At that moment, an alarm sounded. Banza checked the systems.

“Stookie attack!” he said. “Ranger Team 2 is under heavy fire! Tanya-!”

“We’re on our way!” replied Tanya. “Team, it’s Morphing Time!” She and her team pulled out their keys, inserted them into the Morphers, turned the keys in a way so that they went into the Morphers, then holographic dragons appeared and chomped down on them. The holograms disappeared as the Rangers gained their suits. The Rangers then hopped on their motorcycles. The Doctor and Amy were about to hop on, but Banza grabbed their arms.

“…I would advise you, General,” hissed the Doctor, “to let go of us immediately!”

“The Rangers can handle the Stookies,” replied Banza, “but they’re out of their depth like me when it comes to the Toymaker. You, however, triumphed over her twice, from what I overheard while she ranted. I need a strategy in taking her down permanently, Doctor.”

“She also triumphed over me once out of the three games we played,” said the Doctor.

“Two out of three is good enough right now. Please, Doctor. We need a big win against her, not a series of small victories. Morale is bad enough as it is.”

“It’s the small victories that lead to the big ones!” reminded the Doctor. “We didn’t exactly get them during the Time War, so any victory here is a victory nonetheless!”

“Doctor, Banza, I’m guessing you don’t see eye to eye,” remarked Amy, “but maybe you two could pull together and-!”

“MISS ROSE, THAT’S IT!” yelped Banza suddenly.

“General?” asked the Doctor.

“Doctor, the technology is based on retina-scan much like on Gallifrey,” explained Banza. “The Toymaker has been trying to capture the Rangers so-!”

“Of course!” realized the Doctor. “A little game of keep-away! Amy, you’re a genius! Where’s the operations center?”

“This way! Come on, you two!” Amy followed the two Time Lords, confused as to why she was being praised for being smart…not that she didn’t appreciate the praise.

Over in another part of New New York, a cottage stood in the woods. Inside the cottage was a woman in a blue dress with turquoise hair. She looked out the window with a smirk that was rather unlike the warm smile associated with her in the original Pinocchio. Accompanying her was a truly wicked looking witch in brown robes, a collar, and her hair was pulled into two large horns. “The Rangers are playing with the Stookies again,” purred the woman with the turquoise hair, the Toymaker, as she looked through a telescope.

“What kind of toy are you planning on having them fight?” asked the witch in a high-pitched, gravelly voice, the infamous Rita Repulsa.

“I’m not sure,” mused the Toymaker. “Maybe the Ballerina? The Robot? So hard to choose. Aw, look at that! The Rangers are getting a call! Some good ol’ words of wisdom from their mentor! Perhaps…what?” The Toymaker blinked, rubbed her eyes, then looked through the telescope again. “…They’re all retreating.”

“What?!” asked Rita. She pushed the Toymaker aside.

“Um, RUDE!” protested the Toymaker. Rita didn’t listen. She looked through the telescope and saw all the Rangers retreating.

“…We didn’t even send a monster out to stop them!” snarled Rita. “What’s going on?!” A radio then crackled to life. The Toymaker picked up.

“Report,” she said.

“My Lady, we’ve discovered a Time Lord’s presence,” reported the Stookie on the other end.

“…We know the Rangers’ mentor figure is Banza, thank you,” remarked the Toymaker.

“Not that one, another one,” corrected the Stookie. “Their TARDIS must have a malfunctioning chameleon circuit. It’s in the shape of a London Police Box.”

“WHAT?!” shouted the Toymaker. “THE DOCTOR?! HERE?!”

“That’s what we believe,” replied the Stookie.

“SEND OUT ALL STOOKIES! STORM THE RANGERS’ HEADQUARTERS! WE CANNOT LET THE DOCTOR INTERFERE!” She ended the call. “Doctor!” she snarled with venom practically dripping from her words. “For you, no more games! I’ll take control of the Universal Morphing Grid and make the entire multiverse my playground!” In the background, Rita smirked.

Amy followed the Doctor and Banza to the Operations Center, confused as to what’s going on. Banza’s robot, Maiden, arrived as well. “General, the Rangers have re…” she stopped when she saw Amy. “…General, I appreciate that these are desperate times, but civilians cannot be allowed in-!”

“Your fears are misplaced, Maiden,” replied Banza. “Because what the Doctor and I need to do requires Miss Rose here.”

“General!” called Tanya’s voice. She and Albert arrived. “General, you wanted to see us?”

“Doctor, the floor is yours,” said Banza.

“Much appreciated,” replied the Doctor. “Now, Tanya, Albert, all the technology is based on retina-scan, yes?”

“…Yes, even our Morphers,” said Tanya.

“Well, given the Toymaker’s goals, we have to lock her out, yes?”

“We’re not children, Doctor!” hissed Albert.

“Compared to me, even Banza’s a kid,” remarked the Doctor.

“I beg your-! Oh, nevermind,” muttered Banza. “But do think about it. Everyone in the New New York Senate Building, enjoying safety and security that could be sought here on this planet…”

“And one…solitary…Mobian,” finished the Doctor. Albert’s eyes goggled as he realized what they were talking about.

“You’re turning Miss Rose’s eyes into a master key?” he asked.

“Exactly! Then we’re wiping all the records so the Toymaker doesn’t get the clever idea of taking one of your eyes to use your Morphers. She’ll be locked out of the Morphing Grid.”

“So would they!” protested Amy. “Doctor, General, the Rangers would be out of bounds to their own equipment if my eyes were the only eyes to activate things!”

“I’m aware it’s a bit extreme,” replied the Doctor, “but if you have a better idea, I’d like to hear it.” No idea was forthcoming.

“…She’ll have to be ready to initialize the Zords,” remarked Tanya.

“Tanya!” protested Albert.

“It’s the best we have!” replied Tanya.

“And Doctor, if she falls-,” said Banza.

“She won’t!” insisted the Doctor. “I won’t let her. …But, on the safe side, I’ll have a copy of the retina print. Amy, are you ready?”

“…As I’ll ever be,” muttered Amy.

“Initializing retina scan,” reported Banza. “Miss Rose, look into the scanner, please.” Amy looked into the scanner and a bright flashed in her eyes.

“YOW! BRIGHT!” yelped Amy.

“It’ll clear,” assured Tanya.

“Wiping all the records,” said the Doctor. “Amy’s the only one who can activate the Ranger System now.” Just then, Maiden gasped.

“Stookie attack!” she yelped. “And the Toymaker’s in the group!”

“I’m going out there to meet her!” declared the Doctor as she ran out of the room.

“Doctor, wait!” protested Banza. “And she just runs off. Just like when she was that grizzled old man during the Time War. Miss Rose, stay here for a bit. Switch on the Ranger System when it’s safe.” Banza ran after the Doctor.

“…Albert, stay here with Amy until the fight,” ordered Tanya. “I have a crazy idea.” She then ran off after the two Time Lords.

“…Typical,” grumbled Albert.

“Time Lords,” muttered Amy. Albert nodded in agreement.

The Stookies were ready to assault the Senate Building. “Time to deconstruct this Lego set!” chuckled the Toymaker.

“Lovely building toys, Legos!” called the Doctor as she approached. “Terrible for a bare foot though. I should know. Part of my doctorate involves Legos!”

“Doctor!” snarled the Toymaker.

“In the flesh,” replied the Doctor. “Wanted more action figures for your collection? Well, if you don’t mind a little-!”

“No! No games! Not from you!” The Doctor was taken aback.

“No games? That’s a little out of character for you.”

“Whenever you’re the opponent, I always lose!” replied the Toymaker.

“Come on, you beat me before,” reminded the Doctor.

“Then you beat me again! You with that bi-generation trick of yours! Two out of three games, I lost against you! That makes for bad odds! I’m taking care of you here and now!” She aimed a wooden unicorn head on a stick and threw it.

“NO!” called Banza as he dove to intercept. The instant the horn made contact, Banza shrunk down into action figures of all 13 of his incarnations.

A Colorful Game: Part 1

Five people in dragon-themed spandex and helmets with black visors obscuring their faces patrolled a ruined, dark city. A man in a green outfit knelt by a person. “…This one’s gone,” he muttered.

“Doesn’t look like many survivors this time,” sighed a woman in yellow

“Come on, we’re already overdue for check-in anyways,” remarked the leader, a woman in red..

“Why did this have to happen?” asked a woman in pink

“Why does anything happen?” replied the last man in blue as the team packed up.

“I don’t like it,” muttered the woman in yellow. “The Stookies haven’t attacked for months.”

“You must have talked with Banza,” remarked the woman in red.

“We’re good here,” reported the man in green.

“Right. Rangers, return to base,” ordered the woman in red. The team hopped onto dragon-themed motorcycles and took off.

In another part of the city, the TARDIS materialized. The Doctor and Amy stepped out and their faces fell with disappointment. “Eye of Orion, huh?” asked Amy sarcastically. “Greenest planet in the universe?”

“I must have missed a time track exit,” muttered the Doctor. “Sorry about that. …You know, this really is most peculiar.”

“What is?” asked Amy.

“The buildings,” replied the Doctor. “I swear I saw them before in their pristine state. I suppose we’d better look around. But be careful.” As the Doctor began to walk away, she heard Amy yelp in surprise and disgust. “I DID say be careful.”

“Yeah, but I wasn’t expecting to step on a policeman’s dead body!” gagged Amy.

“Show me,” directed the Doctor. Amy pointed at the dead policeman. The Doctor knelt down and began examining it. “…Curious,” she muttered. “This one’s still a bit warm. Must be a recent death.”

“There’s a gun in his hand,” observed Amy. The Doctor noticed the angle. She looked at the side of the head and sighed.

“…Poor devil,” she muttered. “Despair took him over. He sought an end to it all.”

“Suicide? …If I sound insensitive, say so, but given the environment…” Amy looked up at the dark sky.

“No, you’re probably right,” sighed the Doctor. “…The gun’s police-issue and so’s the uniform.”

“What about that wallet?” asked Amy. She pointed out a pocket with a wallet sticking out. The Doctor took the wallet and opened it. The ID and Warrant Card said the man was Jonathan Tennant, aged 60, joined the police in January of 5,000,000,123, and that the police force he worked for was the NNYPD.

“NNYPD!” gasped the Doctor. “This was a New New York Policeman!”

“New New York?” asked Amy. “Are we on New Earth?”

“Yes, and now I know why the buildings looked so familiar! I’ve been here in New New York quite a few times!”

“His Warrant Card said he joined in 5,000,000,123.”

“Yes, probably in his 20’s,” remarked the Doctor. “He’s been a policeman for about 40 years, his entire working life.”

“So that would make it…5,000,000,163 this year, right?” guessed Amy.

“Indeed,” said the Doctor.

“So not that far off from when I joined you and William in the TARDIS. You know, New Earth DID quarantine itself five years ago.”

“Quarantine?” asked the Doctor. “Again?”

“Nothing related to diseases,” assured Amy, “but containing some threat that they couldn’t risk letting out among the other colonies.”

“Well, we’re in your time period, just another part of the galaxy,” remarked the Doctor, “so there’s no risk of temporal cultural contamination. Let’s see-.” She stopped herself when she heard motorcycles approaching. Amy picked up on the noise and both she and the Doctor were surrounded by the people in spandex! “…Power Rangers?!” gasped the Doctor. “The Dragon Warrior Iteration?!”

“Who are you?” asked the Red Dragon Ranger.

“We’re travelers,” explained Amy. “We-.”

“You’re a Mobian!” yelped the Pink Dragon Ranger.

“What in blue blazes are you doing on New Earth?!” demanded the Blue Dragon Ranger. “This planet is under strict quarantine!”

“Look, perhaps we can help,” offered the Doctor. “I’m the Doctor and that’s Amy Rose.”

“Amy Rose? Sonic’s fangirl?” asked the Yellow Dragon Ranger. Amy summoned her hammer. “…Yeah, that checks out,” remarked the Yellow Dragon Ranger.

“And you’re a medic like me?” asked the Green Dragon Ranger.

“Well, a scientist of all trades, but I do have medical knowledge, yes,” said the Doctor.

“You better come with us, then,” said the Red Dragon Ranger.

“Wait, what about this poor man?!” asked Amy as she pointed out the late Officer Jonathan Tennant. The Blue Dragon Ranger’s shoulders slouched and he examined the body.

“…I’m sorry, Grandpa Jonny,” he sighed once he finished. He looked up at the Doctor and Amy. “I doubt you two did it. The evidence points to suicide.”

“You called him Grandpa-,” recalled the Doctor.

“Officer Tennant was Albert’s grandfather,” interjected the Red Dragon Ranger. “A major hero for him.”

“…I’m sorry,” said the Doctor.

“Why? You’re not the one responsible for New Earth’s current hellscape,” replied Albert.

“Look, we better take these two to Banza,” said the Green Dragon Ranger.

“Banza?” asked the Doctor. “…I swear I heard that name before.”

“Are those the latest enemy movements?” asked an old man.

“Yes, General Banza,” replied a feminine looking robot.

“All right. Keep me posted,” said Banza. “I’ll have a look. Oh, have you heard from the Rangers yet? They’re overdue for check-.” A buzzer sounded.

“Banza, this is Red Dragon Tanya,” came the voice of the Red Dragon Ranger. “Apologies for lateness, but patrol turned up two people, a human and a Mobian Hedgehog. Specifically, a doctor and Amy Rose.”

“What?! Are they with you now?!” asked Banza.

“Yes, Sir,” replied Tanya.

“Bring them in!” Banza ended the call.

“How on earth did Amy get here?” remarked the robot.

“Maiden, come with me,” ordered Banza. “We need answers.”

“Yes, General,” replied the robot.

The Power Rangers brought the Doctor and Amy into the command center. The Doctor recognized it as New New York’s Senate Building. “Are there any survivors in the Undercity and the Motorway?”

“There’s survivors from all the districts,” replied Tanya. “They’ve congregated here in the old Senate Building. We’re using as a command center right now.” She and the Rangers were waved through after talking with the guards. They then arrived in a makeshift hangar. “All right, power down,” Tanya ordered the Rangers. They pressed a button on their wrist devices and pulled out keys shaped like dragons. Tanya was of African descent, Jonny’s grandson was as Irish as Jonny was, the Yellow Ranger was a blonde, the Green Ranger was a brunette man, and the Pink Ranger had her hair dyed pink. “All right, time to for introductions,” said Tanya. “I’m Tanya, the boy in blue is Albert, the blonde is Ashley, Green Guy’s Doctor Davis, and Pinky’s called Poppy. Now, where’s Maiden?”

“Maiden,” replied Banza as he arrived, “is with me. So, survivors made you late, Tanya?”

“Well, later than usual, yes,” replied Tanya.

“Oh, you’ve got to be kidding!” complained the Doctor when she saw Banza.

“Doctor?” asked Amy.

“Doctor?” repeated Banza. He then realized something and groaned. “Oh, no wonder Amy’s here! You blundered into this specific point in space-time, didn’t you, Doctor?!”

“Amy Rose, this is General Banza. He’s a Time Lord,” explained the Doctor.

“Like you?” asked Amy.

“No, NOT like me!” hissed the Doctor. “He’s a member of the now-defunct Celestial Intervention Agency! Self-serving and avaricious!”

“Another Time Lord?” asked Tanya.

“So Banza’s NOT the last?” asked Poppy.

“You know what happened?” quizzed the Doctor.

“We all do,” replied Davis. “But he said he was the last.”

“Apparently I was wrong,” said Banza. “But if you’re here, Doctor-,”

“Don’t get your hopes up,” replied the Doctor. “Rassilon’s still working on trying to get our people and planet back.”

“So he can turn us into the Daleks’ replacement?!” snarled Banza.

“Not this time,” assured the Doctor. “Why don’t we have a chat? Telepathically? It’s quite a lot.”

“…Very well. Contact.”

“Contact.” The two Time Lords had their telepathic conference.

“…It involves an adventure with the founder of Time Lord Society and her becoming a saner, more noble woman in the process,” Amy explained to the Rangers. The two Time Lords opened their eyes.

“So Gallifrey is being rebuilt by her alone, Doctor?” asked Banza.

“I told her to call me for help if needed,” replied the Doctor. “It’s a good thing she got the transduction barriers set up first.”

“No kidding. I’d do the same if I knew there were Dalek Temporal Spies. …Well, let’s not worry about Gallifrey’s predicament, perhaps we should bring you into the current picture.”

“Yes, I thought I saw a brief image of a monster,” remarked the Doctor.

“We’ve taken to calling them Stookies,” explained Banza. “They’re sent out by a resurrected Rita Repulsa, but their creator is a Celestial obsessed with play.”

“Obsessed with…no!” Horror crossed the Doctor’s face.

“Yes, Doctor. She’s acting like Pinocchio’s Blue Fairy, but it’s really-.”

“The Celestial Toymaker!” hissed the Doctor. All the while, she heard the arpeggio-style laugh of Stooky Bill.
